Bangladesh and Masuri Helmets
« on: March 09, 2015, 01:17:16 PM »

I noticed today that 2 of the Bangladesh batsmen where wearing Masuri helmets, but the Masuri logo on the back was covered with an SS logo?. What is going on there, could someone shed some light on that.

Lots of sub continent players have SS stickers on the back of their lids. Probably for the same reason that many of them wear/use different brands of gloves/pads/bats. Each item of equipment is a separate sponsorship contract and a bit of extra income.

Some players use a black sharpie to colour over the Masuri logo on the back of the helmet, I presume this is due to sponsorship reasons as well.

Yes head to toe sponsorship deals often prevent branding appearing on a helmet. Root has a deal that i assume stipulates he wears a GM lid, he lost confidence in the old one after the welding failed a while back, and went through lots of brands all of which were 'de-badged' before settling on the new Masuri. In recent times he is back in the new BSI compliant GM lid though.

I think it is one thing to blank out a brand name on a certain piece of equipment and a totally different thing to re-brand a competitors helmet. For me whilst watching i was really annoyed by this and if I was Masuri I would be a little peeved off. Just think people not in the know now will be looking for this helment from SS, and SS has to answer countless questions over the phone when peeps are asking about this helmet to buy. Just seems to me to be very wrong somehow.

Seems weird that cricket companies allow this sort of 're-branding'/ 'brand theft'. Can't imagine Ferrari being happy if Lewis Hamilton was snapped driving one of their cars with a Merc insignia on it. Maybe Masuri doesn't have the legal clout to do anything about it, especially if they have any production in India (do they?)

This sort of thing has gone on for years leading me to suspect that Masuri has either made an agreement with all the major brands or have done a costings for court cases and have decided not to bother as its not worth the hassle.

I'm not sure our forum sponsors would agree with that

Sadly seems the latter is most likely IMO
