Messed up League re-structure
« on: March 12, 2015, 08:37:14 PM »

Can someone explain the logic behind the following league changes

http://www.somersetcricketboard.co.uk/sites/default/files/attachments/gccl_restructure_process.pdf

so in theory, you could be in the wepl, come last in wepl and where as you should go down to div 1 of a county league, you could end up dropping to div 2 of the county league.. even though as it stands you are 'better' than those in div 1... seems messed up!1

why not just demote all those in the county league and move wepl clubs down??

i was netting with some guys from minehead last week and they were on about this.

they couldn't understand the logic behind and because they play 2XI it worked in an even more ridiculous way.

it doesnt cut down on their traveling to games just saves clubs from bristol and such having to tracel to minehead once in the season

gone from being the opening batsmen to being the opening bowler after the first 6 league games

it does cut travel in fairness, maybe the odd random miles away club it doesnt.

30 teams estimated to come down into the Bristol league so is going to be even more shuffling of the pack round my way

reading it. For the 1's you simply need to not get relegated, anything else is irrelevant. the 2's however, if they win their league they'll get into Gloucester league 3.. if they come 2nd to last.... div 5.

so, that seems to me that if the club is sensible they'll basically strengthen the 2's for a season and just do the 1's enough to not get relegated.. that just feels wrong

If the 1s win their league though do they end up in a higher division still though?

yes they would but given one team in that div has gone out and brought in about 4 paid players to ensure promotion that is about as likely as england winning the world cup

I play for Minehead, and we are one of the 'one-off' clubs in the middle of nowhere! the travelling is a bit of a nightmare, our nearest away game this year is an hour and a half away. So hopefully the restructure will reduce it, but I'd rather travel an extra half hour every fortnight to be playing a better standard on better grounds.

And the extra half hour on the bus journey home is another 3-4 beers 😉

Well that makes the Bristol equivalent of that document look very simple! Think they're doing it differently here.
Seems a reasonable idea to me that the leagues should be promotion/relegation all the way down, clearly the rearrange is impossible to keep everyone happy though. Means mine and @thecord 's clubs look like going from div 1 to new div 3 or 5 depending on results next season though, so a lot riding on where you come in the league!

linear is far better than having the silly 2nd xi divisions I do agree.

not sure I agree that extra travel is a good thing Ian. Only good for the keen ones or ones who don't drive which is a small % of the playing community.

It is confusing but I remember reading that it had something to do with WEPL club's second XI's. Some were forced to be in the 2nd XI division when some weren't up to it. I am probably wrong though. we are in div. 4 so not too concerned. I think so long as we finish higher than the bottom 4 we will stay in that division. Probably wrong about that too. In any case it is still preferable to the West Somerset League in my opinion.
