WC 2019
« on: March 15, 2015, 09:50:47 PM »

Big talk about the 10 team world cup and the exclusion of the minnows.

Also, my personal feeling is the group games have dragged on an taken too long.

Why not have the 10 test playing nations, plus 5 minnows.  3 x groups of 5, with at least 2 games played every day.

Top two from each group go through with the best 2 3rd placers.

That way, more group games to see each day - a maximum of 2 minnows per group and minnows represented.

Now where's my flight to Dubai?

the problem with that is if indian dont do well the ICC dont get as much money from sponsors. this to me seems like a very short term arguement because surely if there are more teams playing in the tournament especially ones such as USA and china then there will be a bigger global audience.

so far the best thing about the 2019 edition is the fact that the tournament has less teams in it but last 3 days longer.

im sure even with 14 teams in it like this world cup they could have teams playing every 3/4 days maximum and speed the whole thing up. Pakistan just had a week off before playing Ireland.

They have produced some great cricket, and Ireland nearly did the minnows proud by making it out of the group stage.

But with all due respect should the teams who didn't win a game against a test nation like Scotland, the UAE and England really be allowed to waste everyone's time?  ;)

But has Big Willy Porterfield says - how will minnows such as Scotland, UAE and England ever get any better unless they get the chance to play against Test Nations?

It's working for Ireland in 50 overs and Holland in T20.

i would love to see them expand it to say 20 team i know to start with there would be a lot of mismatches and there would only be a few teams that would ever actually win but to me that is the same as the football world cup and everyone still goes mental for that.

i do agree with big willy why should the weaker nations bother playing if there isnt ever any chance of playing at the world cup.

are they still expanding the t20 world cup? not saying this makes up for it just cant remember.

First things first there should be 2 games every day in the wc regardless.

Was stupid dragging this on so long.  I watch any cricket all year round. Ask our lass. Yet the last week I lost interest.

Especially with this one being in two countries. If aus can have a bbl game every day for 4 weeks. They can certainly do it for the wc!

WC should be 16 teams. 4 groups of 4. Top 2 into quarters. 3 match days each group. 1played  Every 4 days. Means groups could be over in a fortnight. And onto the quarters.

And frankly I don't care if India cry cos they don't qualify. If they don't it's only them to blame not the format.

Have to admit that even I am bored of this world Cup now. Same problem as last time. It just takes too long. If you have six grounds available play six games FFS. Get the groups done in less than a month. Any tournament shouldn't last as long as this whatever the sport!

i think this is the perfect format it'll be all done and dusted in a month decent cricket and no hanging around waiting for the next game.

they then need to expand the 4 years in between so all 20 countries get to play each other a decent amount of times

4 groups of 4 is perfect, give a toss if India goes out - it's not like the ICC need the money that desperately! Also surely they negotiate broadcast/sponsorship deals in advance, not as the tournament progresses?

Afghanistan coach made an excellent suggestion about warmups - every team touring UAE to play Pakistan should play warmups against Afg, likewise England/Ireland/Scotland etc. Repeat that around the world and it's a good start at least, then hopefully the associates can progress faster. To be fair to Australia, at least they've been leading the way in making a habit of playing Ireland when they're over here.

Also - maybe a controversial thought but why does cricket only allow certain teams to play tests? FIFA doesn't make smaller footballing nations play 5 a side until they're good enough to step up, why do we not let other nations play tests? So what if they're not good enough to play the top sides, it's not like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh are anyway.

Unfortunately it seems cricket really is no longer being run with any thought towards the fans, cannot believe the ICC didn't apply to have cricket in the Olympics (imagine that!). New Kerry Packer figure needed please.

Totally agree, it's very important, but it's not everything.  The game will be around long after Giles Clarke and his two money maker mates are dust - let's just hope they haven't left it in an irretrievable mess...

They don't have a passion for cricket, they have a passion for power.

It's only important if you make money important. YOu don't 'need' to earn mega bucks to have a good life, it's only if you want to drive a range rover instead of a Kia sportage or own a 4 bed in a northamptonshire village over a 4 bed town house in corby etc

as for the game being around long after them.. will it?? have you seen the numbers falling out the game at the amateur level?? that means in 10 years time less people watching (both tv and attendances)... 20 years even less etc etc

Its always struck me as ridiculous that teams are waiting 7-9 days to play their next match throughout the World Cup group stages!  Each team should have a gap between games of 3-4 days to keep the flow going.
