Second Strings

Following a thread about the Aussie test side, what would be the best 'A' side a nation could put out and where do you think it would be in a current world rankings? 

England:

Robson, Lyth, Taylor, Vince, Bairstow, Bopara, Prior, Stokes, Rashid, Jordan, Footitt.

Aus, SA, Ind, Pak, Eng, Sri L, NZ stronger so probably ranked 8th (obviously conditions dependent).  Better than WI, Bang, Zim.


I still look back with amazement at the second string side the Aussies could put out around the turn of the millennium:

Love, Rogers, Bevan, Law, Hussey, Hussey, Haddin, Bichel, MacGill, Kaspawicz, Bracken.

Prior behind Buttler in tests???? seriously? Buttler will never be the batsmen in tests that Prior is/was. That's not even going off glove work which prior is still light years ahead.

Well I went off what was our most recent test side.  I'm a big Prior fan/keeper myself.

Hence Stokes in the twos rather than Woakes, Lyth is probably Englands other opener but not been in the side yet so in the twos he goes!

lehmann himself? wasn't he only a ODI type player mainly?

Lehmann missed nearly ten years of Test cricket because Steve Waugh took exception to him electing to play Shield cricket over spending time in the Aussie Academy.

A proper England B-Side (ie guys who would not get in the main Test match 13-14 for a home game of Cook, Lyth, Ballance, Root, Bell, Trott, Buttler, Ali, Anderson, Broad, Stokes, Plunkett, Woakes) would look something like:

Lees
Robson
Taylor
Vince
Carberry
Bairstow
Rashid
Jordan
Footitt
Finn
Wood

Honestly?  I reckon they'd give the current West Indies a game, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh as well.  Probabaly Sri Lanka post Sanga in our own conditions.

How would it compare to Aussie and Yarpie A-sides?  Hmmm...

Australia (allowing them Voges, Nevill, Ahmed and Siddle from their Ashes party along the same lines used above):

Bancroft
Cowan
Burns
Doolan
Voges
Maxwell
Nevill
Faulkner
Abbott/Coulter-Nile

Batting nothing to write home about but you have got to love that seam attack...I think you could add "would beat Pakistan and India in Australian home conditions"

KP I'd omit for the time being, see how things pan out.  Compton is a tricky one - I am not sure that I would select him over any of the five batsmen mentioned - Lees and Vince are "the future", Robson deserves a chance to work on the flaws in his game and Taylor merits the chance.  Carberry is a reliable run gatherer, the better fielder of the two and a more level persona - plus Compton was naff last year...
