how can i bat with a bruised thumb?
« on: April 04, 2015, 04:21:22 PM »

my bottom hand, has a bruised thumb (fielding drill gone wrong). not much swelling, but hurts like hell when i hit the ball hard slightly off center. have a game coming up - is there a way i can minimize the constant agony?

wrap it up tightly, and then put the glove on to provide more cushion?

Pop a painkiller before you bat and grit your teeth?  ;)

I had the same problem last year and used some Ibuprofen gel which worked surprisingly well

I tore a ligament in my thumb.

Missed a few nets. Then just braced it. Hurt like hell. So I manned up abit and just got on with it.

Maybe try co-ban for night treatment it have you considered finger guards?? As a keeper it's a common problem so that's what I use.

Wouldn't it be better just to wait till it's better to save long term damage???

Simple, middle every delivery and stroke the ball into gaps.

Doing this will also enable the purchase of at least 1 more bat to determine if it fits more comfortably against your thumb on impact

not to worry...the possibility of such an injury was what I used to justify all prior purchases.

If you were playing in Australia some might recommend a teaspoon of cement :)

Honestly never had a bruised thumb. Do suffer from lower back and hamstring stiffness/soreness though and I usually munch on ibuprofen (Nurofen) to get through games

Get the lightest bat you can, even a harrow.
Practise gripping super tight with your top hand. Providing you don't pull you should get through an innings. The light bat should make it manageable. Good luck.

I had a really bad thumb at the end of 2013 season, serves me right for being a keeper. Couldn't grip the bat well with my bottom hand at all but I just tried to hang around. It actually helped me play straight and the adrenaline got me to my first hundred. I think I taped it a little on the joints to restrict movement caused by vibration more than anything but not so much to stop me being able to bend it.

Generally for bruised digits I ice a lot. Use arnica as many times a day as I can and if I must, use ibuprofen. I try not to use pain killers and ibuprofen tablets unless I really need to. Not convinced it is good for your stomach.
