Discovered this by accident on a silly whim, but this works really well.

Julian Millichamp suggests using a wet finger to smooth out the Shoe Goo on the bat's toe. That works well, but I still found the Goo to peel off easily.

So, I went with the following approach.

1. Put a bit of Goo on the toe (just like JM)
2. Use a knife / spatula / piece of cardboard etc to spread out the Goo as much as possible (just like JM)
3. THEN, apply a bit of Wood Glue on the toe, and use your finger to smooth out the Shoe Goo (instead of the "wet finger" approach)
4. Once the Shoe Goo is smooth, apply more Wood Glue, and spread out the glue over the toe (take care not to disturb the Shoe Goo)
5. Leave overnight

I found that steps 3 and 4 lead to a much smoother "finish", and also keeps the Shoe Goo in place much, much longer.

I've found shoe goo stays on for quite a while. Much better than using a toe guard!

I just use shoe goo on its own now. I could never cut / fit the rubber toe guard without it looking terrible and falling off anyway

With shoe goo it goes on easily and when it starts peeling cones off easily to be replaced. I find it lasts long enough for me.

So you're applying PVA to top of the shoegoo?

Yes. Essentially the same as the "wet finger" approach, but instead of water, I'm using PVA glue. And then after smoothing, I am applying another light layer of glue to cover the whole toe. The key is to do this after the knife/spatula step.
