SS - consistently inconsistent
« on: April 15, 2015, 12:07:23 PM »

Hi all

Just a quick thread. I was shown three pictures of the same model bat today. They are, to my knowledge, supposed to be all the same shape of they're the same model, but that wasn't the case. It looks like the maker shapes the cleft however they feel on the day and applies the stickers.

Bat 1 - no profile shot but the spine is very prominent, right through the toe

Bat 2 - spine not right down to the toe but still goes low down the bat. Concaving present

Bat 3 - a fairly full profile duckbill!

Plus one looks to have a toe guard.

The toe guard (or lack of) has been pointed out, but the TON stamp on the back of the top one set my OCD off, and if I received one like that it would do my nut in! It just looks wrong with the O not being in the centre of the bat (and made obvious by the spine!)

The duckbill one isn't dead centre but I could live with that because the spine doesn't exaggerate the problem.

Maybe they take the lower grade clefts give them to the apprentice (or the guy who used to do the TON colouring in  ;) )who then tries to copy an example in front of them, and whatever they make gets badged up as a base model in the range. It would be a good way for them to get experience so they improve without wasting materials.

Take a gamble I guess. I'd be annoyed if I ordered a bat blind and there could be such a variance in what I received. Especially if I hadn't asked for umpteen photos.

Cricket bats and OCD do not go together.

I have seen variations in all brands, it may be old stock re-stickered, a higher model bat graded down to fill an order, an off day with the stickering. Apart from having too many models under their own label I don't think many people realise the amount of bats they turn out for varying brands, I can understand the variances in some instances.

They have a lot of models but essentially all one shape or variations on a theme. I can see how you can have huge variation, especially with the rate a which things get stickers as different models/grades. If buying blind however yes it would be rather irritating!

Does that apply to GM, B3? Err no. Do handmade bats like H4L have a duckbilled toe and a spined toe on 2 different Hellfire's, no. If you buy a certain model then you expect it to come in a certain profile. If it doesn't then it isn't the bat you paid for. That's ok in the UK as you can get a refund but overseas you are probably stuffed.

Can you find a manufacturers profile or shape description for this model?

I'm sure there is somewhere, if I knew the exact model. Come on, its not really an excuse for knocking out the same model with different toes is it?
