Broken Titanium Grill - Masuri Test Helmet
« on: April 24, 2015, 01:51:01 AM »

Folks,

Thanks to the (expletive) glare, I top edged a short ball into  my grill. Today, I noticed that my grill is broken i.e. the welding of the cross joint has come undone. The middle grill bar is loose. I am wondering if the  helmet grill is safe for usage. This is the second season with this helmet. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Impossible to say for sure (define 'safe'), but it will definitely provide less protection than before.

Doesn't it say in the pamphlet that comes with masuri to replace after one hit! As its no longer guaranteed to protect as it once did before.

Our stumper took one to the grill stood up to a quick. And his entire masuri turned to jelly. I wouldn't have wanted to take a second hit in that.

I think most people will say that if its been hit its time to get a new helmet, but in saying that i dont know how bad it its but if its loose i would buy a new one unless your facing slow bowling in your league

If it is loose then there is a risk that next time it is hit, it will break off completely. Shards of titanium and close proximity to your face is not great combo.

Worst advice ever! Slow bowling or not, a damaged helmet isn't going to offer you any real protection.

As it's been hit and is showing visible signs of damage it has to be replaced I'm afraid. End of discussion.

It might be a pain in the backside, but I'd rather pick up the bill for a new helmet than leave it to chance and be pushing up daisies as a result!

you need to get a new grille at the very least.

You may have to replace the whole lid, depending on if there is damage around the screws which join the lid to the grille - i.e. where the ayrtek of Stuart Broad's failed.

The buy a new one part was sound advice, the "unless your you're facing slow bowling in your league" was ridiculous!

That is for the helmet ( head protection) not the grill -- same for motorcycle helmets.

I am going to check the whole helmet today.

With regards to bats, I am prepared for such a contingency ...had this happen to me last year with my match bat. I had never thought that I would need a back up helmet. I have games tomorrow.
