Third umpire idea
« on: May 01, 2015, 05:12:16 PM »

Just an idea, inspired by the way baseball does video replay.

Would the third umpire be better off at a location away from the crowd, and only asked to review the footage that's relevant to the dismissal (so no build up, no idea if it was a strong/weak appeal) and rather than be asked if there is any evidence that overturns the decision, be asked to make their own independent decision.

Just an idea. I get the impression that Cook survived the catch at short leg because of the context of the referral. I.e. Weak appeal, fielder not sure etc..

If you were asked to make an independent decision, removed from the rest of the events on the field, you might come to a different conclusion

nah, there was clear evidence of ball on floor.  Even without the benefit of doubt which'd have to go to the batsman, that was a clear one.
