illegal bats
« on: May 14, 2015, 06:22:09 PM »

So who could me a cheap illegal bat?
Lets agree that this bat is NOT going to be used any ICC officiated game - Far from it, it is intended for training and giving net practice to a couple of baseball sluggers here in United States so that they can get a taste of cricket.

I am looking for something like this,

4.75 inches (120 mm) face width - This is a challenge since it may not fit in the presser, I guess.
Weight not more than 2.8 _ we can make it in Academy size or reduce the handle length by an inch to keep the weight under control
High Middle in a Chunky profile - Very Hard pressed
Narrow Round Handle
Grade 3 Kashmir Willow or pine or oak or cherry wood with as many knots and butterflies as possible, and I don't mind it as long as the price is capped at under 50.

Not being funny mate, but a wider bat is a waste of time if you want to get people into the game, especially if you want it to be 2lb8.
If you want something cheap, I'd get a legal width MSR off eBay - they're less than £50 and will definitely have the blemishes you seek.
You won't go far wrong for the price.

Why do you want a wider bat for baseball players? Their bats are narrower than ours... Unless offcourse the players are pitchers  :-[

Doubt anyone will make you a bat made out of pine/ oak/ cherry wood, that's before we even mention the weight issue. You do realise that most wood, especially hardwoods would be dramatically heavier than willow? The who's premise seems implausible.

You'd be better off just buying some of those dubious "english willow grade 1" bats off ebay, i've seen those things selling for as low as £30 (advertised as £1 with £29 postage). They'd probably be okay for teaching them the basics.

If you can find someone who will make you an extra wide bat with a chunky profile that only weighs 2lb8 tell the bat maker to put me down for 2 of them please mate...  ;)

I could do with an extra wide bat most of the time to be honest...  :-[

How it will help teach anyone the basics however I have no idea, it's more likely to have a detrimental effect than a positive one in my opinion

It's an odd request, but I'm sure someone on here could do it for you. I think the unfinished clefts I had were around 115mm in width before they were planed down.

Again, it's rather odd. 108mm is wide enough, heck, kids learn with bats that are less than 100mm in width!

That sounds like a good deal. Let me find you a £100 note that has a nice big hole in the middle

Just let them swing with the baseball bat that they are used to. I've seen Michael Clarke practice like this before. Once they are comfortable with the bouncing ball switch over to a cricket bat. Their grip will be different but just let them be.
