bat position in stance
« on: May 15, 2015, 01:10:24 PM »

My 14 year old son has asked me to post regarding his bat position.
I will try and explain as best as I can.
He holds his bat when facing with the face of the bat pointing to the fielder at point and the bat tip pointing to first slip rather than straight behind.

the usual position that people are taught is to have the bat pointing behind and the face facing the ground with a high elbow.
several coaches over the years have tried to alter his position but he finds the "correct" position to be so uncomfortable and unnatural as to make hitting
the ball impossibe.
His elbow position is lower and the whole stance is what I would call looser.
he has a good range of shots and is particularly good at wristy drives on the offside.
his question is do you think there is anything fundamentally wrong with having this bat position.
He is starting to play his first full season of senior cricket at a good level this year.

I don't think he should fiddle with it too much if it's working for him. Also look at Ricky Ponting's bat position. I think your son's bat lift sounds similar to his and hope as high as his.

Bradman had a funny pick up. Could you post or pm me some picks/video as I am not 100% sure I can visualize what he is doing.

How does he actually hold the bat, that is the most important thing, v's to the left of the spine as you look down for a right handed.

the bat should not be picked up directly over the stumps with the face pointing to the ground.

Sounds to me like he is doing it correctly.

The key is whether he can bring the bat down in a straight line with the full face showing on impact

the v of his grip is slightly to the left of the spine.
if you were the bowler as you ran in all you would see is the outside edge of his bat as it is raised.when the ball is delivered he brings the
bat down so the full face is showing.

I wouldn't worry too much about that - this is Don Bradman...

and these guys have scored some runs before now...

it shows there is no one size fits all approach (it also shows how much Alex Hales stands like Michael Vaughan!)

oh and this bloke has scored a few test runs too

The Matt Prior stance is the same as what he does.
None of those players have the bat face facing the ground when the bat is raised, which is what some coaches are trying to get him to do.

he is going to stick with what works for him after looking at those pics.

As long as the bat comes down straight it doesn't really matter. I mean, look at Steve Smith, his pick up / back lift is a mess!

Out of curiosity where does he tap his bat?

Pick up the bat Angle the toe towards 2nd slip. Has long hs he brings the blade down straight there's no need to tinker.

I was just thinking about making a topic like that:)
I am currently in same sort of boat so i think let him do what he feels comfortable but if he is having weakness in his shots then he might have to make himself used to of it. Its very awful awful feeling:(
I always tapped my bat a bit across of crease line but now i am trying to tap it parallel to crease line so that the full face of bat is open and facing towards ground. My personal observation is that the new way would help me connecting with the ball on my pads and leg side and also shots would go towards extra cover rather than midoff. I dont know if it makes any sense but changing is feels very weird.
