Because this bat has pin knots it should automatically be graded as grade 2 in my opinion. This bat probably plays better than a lot of other grade 1s, and that is what a lot of people struggle to understand.

Regardless of pin knots and any other blemishes.

I would struggle to explain spending £250 on a cricket bat, regardless of how good it is.

I would much rather the H4L brand than an off the shelf but still wouldn't spend this amount of money.

http://www.cricketbatwillow.com/blades-grading

I judge my grading based on what JS Wright say. Grading of willow is done on looks only. (I'm not getting into density or crown willow for pros here) Grading doesn't take into account ping or pickup, its all about the looks of the willow. If you want to grade that way that's fine, but it's not the traditional way. The link above is JS Wrights take on all this.

There is no industry standard for willow grading. JS Wrights happen To be the biggest willow merchant but that doesn't mean their opinion on grading is industry wide fact. GN grow and process all their own willow, completely outside the willow merchant model so can grade as they see fit. Matt at H4L doesn't use JS Wright, so shouldn't be judged on their system.

As I said, there is no industry standard, or regulatory body overseeing things and ensuring merchants/batmakers are grading fairly. To the point where if I chose to do so, I could put a handle into an old chair leg and sell it as grade 1. It is grade 1 because I, the bat maker, say it's grade 1.

Grading is all opinion, and the only opinion that matters is that of the bat maker and the buyer. People picking over pinknots etc from photos are not relevant at all.

Matt was obviously happy with the bat when he made it, so was I when I picked it out, and the buyer seems delighted too, nothing else matters and will only serve to take us round in circles as the grading debate has been done to death on the forum already.

Each to their own. Knowing how much money goes into making bats, and the prices of willow clefts, I have no problem with someone asking that price for it. H4L make good bats.

I think alot of the forum sponsors on here are pretty generous with their grading. Maybe because they are the little guys against the big boys? I have seen a number of bats purchased via this forum that get graded as G3/G2 that could easily pass as G1 at a few of the big companies.

Surely the only person the grading matters to is the buyer.  It's a simple choice - if you don't agree with the grading and it matters to you, don't buy the bat!
I've seen loads of GM originals I thought were poor so I didn't buy them.  Simple.

Although there's no industry standard the bat buying public will always pickup on  pin knots blemishes etc therefore it is reverlent when it comes to grading and price regardless of what retailers say.

If a retailer/manufacturer gets it wrong, the bat won't get sold.  If the bat is sold, it's hard to argue that it was incorrectly graded, as someone has been willing to pay the cash for it!

Although I agree in principle it's universally acknowledge that  G1 willow should be among other things free of knots and blemishes

I would agree, indeed I expect grade 1 to have no heartwood.  However, I know others don't so they buy the bats and I don't!

I would hope that g1 bats wouldn't have heartwood in. This is mainly so that anything with heartwood gets downgraded for me to buy at lower prices ;)

Many years ago anything with heartwood was dismissed from being grade 1 straight away. Now its down to percentage. I like heartwood in my bats too, and prefer to be able to get them cheaper ;) Sarg and I talk a lot about bats and we often disagree with grading of bats. Sarg had one the other day and he thought it could sneak in as a G1 and I thought it was a G3 everyday of the week. I had a G2 once and Sarg was certain it was a G3. Each to their own, except pin knots in G1's ;)

Yawn!

This grading debate comes up every couple of months or so and goes in the same circles each time.

If you like the bat and are willing to pay the asking price, go ahead.
If you don't agree with the grade or price, then don't buy it.
Simple

Yes of course the buyer if he sees the bat as a choice
But it's not that simple is it

I think it could be - I think it's us on here that over-complicate things.
