Picking a match bat - a good problem to have
« on: May 21, 2015, 01:00:44 PM »

Hi All,
Similarly to alot of others on here, I have far too many bats.
Lately, I have been modifying handles to make them feel great in my hands by adding either binding or layers of medical tape under the grip. (I think the way a bat feels (or makes you feel) when you pick it up is possibly it's most important feature.)
This has caused a problem as I now have 3 bats I'm really loving batting with and I can't choose my match bat for the upcoming season. I'm a cricketer that likes to have a set routine and this problem has really got in my head. I don't think I can get away with 'just picking them up and deciding on match day'.
Each but is different and have their own pros and cons.
I've been to off season nets and had long sessions with each of them but still can't decide!!!! It's basically driving me nuts.
As the title says it is a good problem to have but I'd like to have it settled in my mind before round 1 is here.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Am I just crazy? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Ben

Just pick one and stick with it, doesn't matter which.

Give each of them an innings and stick with whichever one scores you the most runs. Everyone knows it's the bat that scores the runs not the silly fella holding the end of it.

This is a very important question and something that I struggled with for quite some time. I stumbled on the answer through trial and  error. Here is what I found: the bat will tell you. My match bats are those that enable me to play strokes that I wouldn't have thought I could play and clear the boundary. You will play freely with your match bat.

 It is that simple.

I have bats that have great pick up and pings  while I'm standing in my home and bouncing a ball on them. Until and unless you take a bat to a match, you just don't know how it hits.

Surely the match bat is the one that has the nicest stickers and profile and will get the most admiring comments from the opposition  ;)

I carry 4 in my bag.  Wet/net bat, match bat, lend out bat and heavy bat. I pick each up in turn several times before I bat, then pick the one which feels best.

I have similar problem, two seasons ago was chopping and changing bats almost every innings depending on the pitch, pace of the bowling or game situation etc and averaged about 25.
Last season stuck with same bat and averaged about 35. For some reason have started messing around with different bats this season again and am struggerling a bit. I think i am definatly gonna go back and just stick to one bat as i think timing improves when you get used to one bat.

Go with what makes you feel good. If you decide to switch mid season, do it. It shouldn't be a source of stress. Treat it like a win-win-win scenario.

I've three I pick up and use in match scenarios, having used them throughout the winter nets. My Dynadrive, my B3 and my Hunts County. The HC has seen the most use as it's also my lend out bat. Currently it's scored about 250 runs in LMS, having been used by half my team and half of two other teams. Everyone who has used it has been very impressed.

Thanks for all suggestions.
I think I'll give them all a crack in the first three rounds and see which one compliments my game the best in a match situation.
This system will of course not work because I'll ton up in the first game, not want to swap and then start to wonder if I'd have made more with a different stick........probably another good problem to have, haha.

I own 5 bats but have owned up to 20 at one time before but I only used 1 bat in all matches really. I certainly always used the same bat on Saturdays. As Ryan says you have to get used to it. I just used winter nets or nets to decide which was going to be this seasons match bat

I have two made identical pick up grips and stuff and go from there have around 12 bats 5 are ornaments though now. Get used to your bats is true and stop changing them it will effect you
