Possibly lyth if he fails in this test or maybe Balance.

Bit harsh for either to be dropped before the Ashes.

I agree that bell needs some big runs to keep him in the side

Runs vs experience with Bell.

I doubt there'll be any changes (barring injury) for the 1st ashes test.

When the Aussies came last time Lehmann had just taken over and the were slowly rebuilding. I think that is how England will go.

The Aussie tests will show the real weaknesses, not that there are any massive holes, just some places to tighten up.

selectors have to stick to this xi and only change if someone is really failing or injury.

I'm in two minds. It would be god to see the best XI that we possibly have in England right now on form. Hales in for Lyth and maybe a replacement for Bell but it would also be very silly to change a side for what is to be the biggest series since the last Ashes series.

Two things. It would be extremely harsh to drop the best opener of 2014 after 1 test and getting dragged around the West Indies. I'm sure if he hadn't, Lyth would be scoring runs in the CC. It's not as if he failed when he did play. Got a 50 and a quick fire dozen or so when chasing the game hard.

Doesn't Hales bat 3 for Notts?  Therefore bring him in for Bell at 3, push Ballance down one or bat him at 4 in the old KP role rather than have him opening.

I'm not even sure Hales will be in form anymore, isn't he in India?

I'd probably just say stick with what we have for now and try and build on it to give the ashes a good go. Yes you are right about hales batting 3. Batsman change about so much though. Look at root. He's batted in several different positions and manages to bat well wherever he is put. That's my kind of cricketer, just plays his game! Myth will keep his spot a bit longer, but you have to look at the selectors and some decisions they have made over time.

That was a warm up game. He hasn't scored any runs since the last home Ashes series.

Edit: Oh no it was a test...

I reckon he has credit. Seems intent on being over positive, rather than just playing.

Do you think that bell being dropped the vice captains role is maybe a kick up the bum to say if you don't score runs you could be dropped?
