What part of "Johnson has a poor record in England and the pitches won't suit him" have I misunderstood?

Johnson has a poor record in England averaging in 2009 32.5 and going at 4 an over - it's not great is it. Anderson averages - 26.77 over 60 test matches. Albeit based on 5 tests and a small sample size but you can't trot out the "Anderson is rubbish overseas" (when we play in Aus) and not expect the same argument to come back.

The pitches won't suit him - my opinion and I certainly wouldn't be preparing anything with pace and bounce. England have a better chance on slow low english wickets without much grass and concentrating on swinging the ball/bowling an English length. That's why I fear Harris, he's the nearest to a typical English seamer Aus have.

England didn't mis-trust Anderson in 2013, they recognised the best way to win was for Swann to out bowl anything Australia had. Which he did before Aus got a proper spinner in. I don't think raging turners will work unless Root turns into Jim Laker overnight and Ali bowls the first legal doosra.

I didn't make the statement anywhere here that "Anderson is rubbish is overseas" - you just did.

But now that we are on that topic, for a real good belly laugh, check out Anderson's stats over his 13 tests in Australia. They are truly LOL-worthy, with only one good series when Australia were in utter disarray in 2010-11. The rest of the time the Aussie batsmen practiced their golf shots on "The Greatest of All Time".

You clearly have seen nothing of Hazelwood and assume that Starc's trajectory of improvement has never happened.

Prepare seam friendly decks at your peril, for we WILL play a five-pronged seam attack to send the missiles back the other way.

Apart from the odd mad moment at headingley, Australia never play 5 seamers lol. 3 seamers - Harris, Johnson + starc or Hazelwood, then sticknote Watson as a 4th seamer and Lyon. You love your number 6 to bat, so that rules out any change.

You are discounting a combo of Harris, Johnson, Hazelwood/Starc, sicknote Watson (who seems to be more durable these days) and Mitch Marsh who can bat at six as well as bowl at 140+ clicks.

Guys, please can we keep this a little more friendly, no Vic baiting and Vic, no pomm bashing...

If Johnson bowls like that the Australian tourists will keep the ashes.

But we will produce more slow dead tracks, so there is virtually no chance of that happening. If it does then there won't be an English supporter who will begrudge the success.

Vic, are you at all worried that your team are so old??!
The average ages is about 40 and this could well be the last tour for Harris, Johnson, Rodgers, Watson, Voges Haddin and Clarke too. That is over half the team!!

Nope.

We are picking guys on form

There are direct replacements for all those blokes with the exception of Clarke (guys that average over 50 don't grow on trees)

Harris - Hazelwood
Johnson - Starc
Siddle - Pattinson
......... - Cummins
Watson - Mitch Marsh
Haddin - there about 4 guys all with legitimate claims
Rodgers - Shaun Marsh
Voges - Burns

I love how 2009 ashes get brought up. You guys do realise Flintoff, Collingwood, Pietersen, Swann and Strauss don't play for England anymore?

It also must be remembered that Mitchell Johnson has a mustache now. This has seen him be a much better bowler!

I don't see age as an issue for the future of the side. It just means that the players coming in are seasoned 1st class players who can perform straight away in different conditions and match situations, especially the batsmen.

Me neither, but in the absence of the departed Phil Hughes, he will get first crack at opening. On form though, Ed Cowan should logically be next cab off the rank as he had a glorious summer before the BBL enforced shutdown. But I think the selectors feel that Shaun Marsh should be given a clear run at making the position his own. I reckon Maddison is next in line after S. Marsh.

Don't be such a girl, unlike Gerry SA I would call this a bit of banter in comparison. Both sides are making valid points and it's a robust discussion.

England had experience in 1989 and got thumped by a young Australia side.

Need something to hold on to  :)

Neither Marsh I rate but Mitch can't do any worse than Watson, on the plus side anybody should be better than Haddin. His footwork has gone to pot and he's dropped a few recently. How nobody doesn't realise he hangs on the backfoot with little foot movement when batting I don't know. Ought to be a pitch up walking wicket, but perhaps I'm missing something! Is Pattinson ever fit? Hazelwood, Cummins, Starc totally agree.
