Creaky finger
« on: June 08, 2015, 02:04:57 PM »

Hi all

Bit of a strange one, but I'm after some advice please.

On Saturday I tool a blow to the end of my little finger while fielding. It was a bit uncomfortable at the time, but I thought nothing of it.
Yesterday it was bruised, swollen and painful to move, so I taped the joint and carried on as normal.
Today, upon removing the tape I can move the joint. It is painful, and it feels like the inside of the joint is "creaking" as I move it, almost as if things are rubbing together.

Anyone experienced the same/similar? What would you recommend?
I know this sounds stupid - but the joint almost feels like it needs some WD40 in there to stop things rubbing  :-[

Keep moving it. This is why you don't tape joints! Finger injuries should be taped to a neighbouring finger if anything.

I've done similar, turned out to be a flake fracture in the joint.  Go see a doc & get an xray.

As above,

Have done the exact same. It will be a tiny fragment of bone that has separated from the finger. Bit like a splinter.

Go get it x-rayed and probably take a week or 2 off (advice will be 4 to 6 weeks). Otherwise you will end up with crooked fingers.

Make sure you get a pair of nifty finger trousers!!! Two tubigrips stitched together.

I'm experiencing exactly the same fracture now, it's just a chip off the front of the bone where the finger has bent back and broken the corner off the middle phalange at the base joint. I've been given 3 weeks out min for it to get "sticky" and heal properly, when I did it I only thought it was bruised because I had a fair amount of flexion in the joint, but the problem with this fracture is bending it back or straightening it can break it more or tear the tendon.

I would recommend going to a radiographer just incase

Well bother! I was hoping you'd all say it was nothing to worry about  ;)

I've left it unstrapped and tried to ignore it as much as possible the last couple of days, but there's still pain in the joint.
I'm playing Saturday & Sunday this weekend (weather permitting) so an X-ray this weekend is probably out of the question...  :-[

I'll hope I don't make it any worse this week and then (maybe) go for a proper diagnosis early next week.

@L21 I already have some of those from a shattered (finger) tip a couple of years ago so I'm fully kitted out  :D

Well I played today and stupidly left it unstrapped. Guess where I (almost inevitably) got hit!

This resulted in more pain, it hurts rather a lot to bend it now.
Beer and painkillers worked tonight, I think it'll be a strap it up and grit my teeth job tomorrow though...  :-[
