Choosing a new bat

Good Morning Gents,

Hopefully this is in the right place.

I have been deliberating over a new bat for a while now, perhaps something that is made to suit me. In my youth I decided it would be fun to buy big bats with no real idea of what I was using.

I currently have a Big Kahuna 2'11 which hasn't been used since my first season I had it.

Down at Sussex yesterday I saw a Newbury (in size 7) which I didn't realise was a size. It picked up really nicely and as a small player, it seemed to fit my height perfectly 5 ft 4/5.

It was a duck billed shape and weight wise was perfect, unfortunately the weight wasn't on the bat and i didn't have the time to ask.

My question is that £199 is a lot of money for a cricket bat, however, is it worth it if it feels right? Or could the forum sponsors come up with something better for less than £200.

I would like something that would match my height, with a thin handle (small hands) and to be light. (and go like a train (optional))

The above post seems like a good deal. Bat made to your requirements by h4l at under 200 pounds.

I would also consider getting a hand made grade 1 butterfly bat from Paul Aldred in a profile that would suit your game. Probably wont be the best looking bat ( although some still do look pretty nice) but that doesn't really matter when you're trying to hit runs. That would set you back around 160 pounds or so if I remember correctly. There is a bunch of videos out about these bats and  he is on the forum so check out his stuff.

After much deliberation, this is what I will be getting for my next bat.

Thank you L21 for starting this thread up. I too intend to buy a grade 1 bat, 2" short blade & weighing in around 2.13
What better place than the supremely knowledgeable forumites throwing in their experiences & suggestions
I need it posted to India so gotta feature in shipping+ customs too

Just an update on this for anyone interested.

Was coaching a colts session last night and then hit a few balls. I had the chance to use a size 5 and size 6. Personally I preferred the size 5 bat, however I noted that my stance was incredibly low to perhaps compensate for the bat size. The size 6 felt better but was a bit heavy for my liking.

Before anyone asks, both bats were kookaburra evo blaze Kashmir Willow, therefore I have absolutely no indication on weight. I wanted to get a good idea of size.

Would the advice be to go with the size 6 to be similar to my height or bat with a size 5 because i feel comfortable? Would this have a detrimental effect on my batting by getting into bad habits?

I am the same hieght as you and also have small hands i used to use a standard S/H at 2lb 7 ounces then went down to a custom made with a 1inch and i/4 diameter thin handle size 7 better known as an academy with a weight of 2lb  6 ounces but the bat I have found which suits me best is a 2lb 4 ounce GN pro performance 11 grain   Harrow with a mid middle i am hitting the middle of the bat more often and the lightness of the bat and increased bat speed is helping me with pulls and  hooks to the boundary and shots all around the ground.
With regard to kashmir willow it is normally heavier Than English Willow.

Just curious,

the problem with using a junior size bat is that they arent the same width as adult bats. i suggest if you can that you get down to a bat maker and get something made at the ideal size for you while maintaining a full width.

Yes if you go for an Harrow size they are 4 inches wide and a standard S/H is 4 1/4 inches wide but I don't think the difference is that noticeable especially if you go for a flat face.

I would suggest M&H international or CK22 in Harrow, u can get up to 2.7 weight. The balance is amazing and they ping like cannons. U can grab those for about £200 now
