Little update on this - the game went well with the "Old team" victorious with one ball to spare.
There was plenty of alcohol consumed and hopefully a lot of money raised, by both raffle tickets and in the charity pot (I was putting money in every time I walked past at least, and I saw a couple of notes in there!)
Onto the game itself, we batted first and made 236 in our allowed time (I think it was 3 and a half hours). Our number 3 came out of retirement for one game only and made 59 (it was like he'd never been away), and our overseas player made 69.
I got to walk out to the middle I'm my Woodworm kit, and even faced one ball at the end for 1*. My bat did get a lot of attention from both sides, being referred to as "a blast from the past" by one player and "a memory of my youth" by another. I think I'll be using it every week now!
We then had a banquet! I have never seen such amazing teas at a game before. 6 types of sandwich (including sausage and tomato ketchup!), cheese and French stick, salady bits and coleslaw, pasta with pesto, Caribbean chicken cous cous, strawberries & cream and more types of cake than I was able to identify!
We went out to field rather reluctantly (I'm not alone in saying I'd have rather stayed in the tea room and eaten until I was about to burst!)
The "old side" had a few players making a comeback after several years out of the game. I might take a break if it means I suddenly learn to bat, as said players made 42, 36 not out and a 12* including a huge six and the winning runs.
I did contribute a wicket in my spell (6 overs, 1 maiden 1-35) but today wasn't about the result, it was about the memory of a friend who was taken too soon.
At the end of the day this was an excellent game, played in the right spirit (none of this sledging nonsense that's become all to common in club cricket) and was a fitting tribute. Everyone said the guy we had the game for would've loved it. That's the important thing about today. It was 26 mates playing cricket and sharing a few drinks, with family and friends coming to watch and enjoy the day too. It's days like this that remind me why I love cricket so much.
