Trouble with my game.
« on: June 20, 2015, 06:15:24 PM »

Hi,

I need some help with my game. Whilst being the 3rd best bat in my U12's team (I open) , and 5th best in the U13's (I bat 5), I still find myself getting out too easily , and have been bowled in at least 75 percent of my games. My top scores are 11no (batting 5) and 10(Opening) , followed by at least 7-8 ducks/1 run innings from both 5 and 1. Whilst my net batting is good I can't put that into a game situation and always get out to the straight ball , even from a slow/medium pacer. I also keep for the U12's , and usually let about 10 byes through per (25over) game. These are mostly due to one bowler who opens for the county U12's , and is a left arm over quick. I struggle to take the ball moving across me and it's not helped by the bowlers inaccuracy and tendency to put it down the legside. I play on low bounce pitches but am unable to stand up due to the pace.
I think it's down to my foot movement (or lack of it) and also the fact I sometimes move the right foot backwards , in line with my left so I face towards backward square. I don't usually spend much time in training as a keeper as it is usually nets or ground fielding.
Just to fill you in , the reason I keep is that I can't bowl and have OK hands and also fancied a challenge and a prospect for new kit.

Can anyone suggest any drills I could try for keeping , maybe using a Katchet or slip cradle and also how could I improve my batting and my playing of a straight ball.
Thanks , James

Use lighter pads. Look at Aero brand.

Take batting lessons from Gary Palmer.

To stop getting out to straight balls practice  bringing your bat down in a straight line use a full length mirror if you can show the bowler the makers name on your bat

Hi James,

Given your age it would be a great idea to speak to one of the coaches at your club or in your local area - it is a great place to start and I'm sure they will be happy to put a bit of time in with you.

They should be able to see if there's something in particular that's causing you issues - especially with your batting.

Keep at it, keep working and good luck.

Ian smith spoke about the importance of feet movement in keeping during the recent test series. Have a look if you can find any videos.  ;)
