As an update, I asked the guy in the shop attached to the nets we used yesterday and he said buckles on outside, he even said 80% of people wear their pads wrong.

I fold the strap that overhangs, so not a problem for me. I jsut can't seem to bring myself to have the straps on the inside.

Kookaburra high end pads have an extra 'cane' in the lead leg (left pad for a RH batter)- which means buckles on the outside. dependent on brand though so no right or wrong answer.
