Jammed Finger
« on: July 06, 2015, 03:09:13 PM »

Got a bit of a jammed finger going on from keeping last week.  Its on the PIP joint on my middle finger on my left hand (the joint one down from the knuckle).  Did it on Saturday and the swelling has just gone down now but still a bit bruised.

Got a few games this week, thoughts on damage I could do to it or any remedies anyone might have?  Currently thinking of playing anyways and hiding in the field and saving it for keeping on Saturday as much as possible.

This might not help you but I too had couple of thumb injuries while keeping this season, few weeks ago ball hit flush on the tip my thumb and thumb was swollen for couple of weeks , I still played every Saturday with pain and kept wickets as well , now the swelling has gone away and I can't fully straighten that thumb , i'm not sure what happened but it must have been a fracture or some sorts but I didn't feel massive discomfort while batting.

Then the same happened with my other thumb last week(bottom hand when batting), but this time it was very painful while batting due to vibration of the bat, I taped the finger with a home made splinter for the entire week, now the swelling has gone away and I can fully straighten the finger without any issues.

So probably best to go to doctors and get an x-ray or some sorts to check it out, or at least do what I did with a splinter.

I had the same injury a while ago swelling went down but the area  between knuckle and finger tip is bent.

No injuries this year so far but last year had the same thing but on both thumbs. Not a lot you can do but I used some padded tape just to give me a bit of extra protection. When I batted I taped them up fairly tight so they went a bit numb but I wouldn't recommend this for very long. The swelling went down by December but I could play hockey from September without pain (you really feel it with vibrations down a stick). You could try a bit of heat and ice. Maybe a bit of arnica and anti-inflammatory gel or tablets. Bone bruises always take ages to fix.

Do you have baseball finger?

I have this on a finger on my right hand from wearing cheap gloves against fast bowling! The tendon is ruptured.

Ah, ok. Looks like the RICE treatment followed by movement is the way to go.

You should always try to keep the finger moving,

Although painful, the joints will seize and then become stiff and uncomfortable.

The use of a stress ball can be good for this as it provides a gentle resistance and allows you to control your own pain threshold.

Is that actually a picture of your finger? Mine looked exactly like that and it was broken, a little splinter in exactly the place you've described, same finger actually. They strapped it up and told me not to play cricket for 6 weeks, I didn't play for 3 weeks and came back to loads of (No Swearing Please) from my team about being a wimp, in retrospect I don't think I really needed 3 weeks out but the hospital scared me. Having said that, I think "keep it moving" is terrible advice if it's broken, if it's still bright purple after a week, from my limited knowledge, it seems broken.
