Getting "hit" in the plums
« on: July 09, 2015, 03:50:23 PM »

Having watched the test match and seen Alistair Cook reduced to tears and having suffered a similar fate a couple of weeks ago. Luckily the box proved its worth.

How do you deal with getting hit in the plums?

I don't think there is a miracle cure but hopefully there is some funny stories to go alongside this debate.

Couple of seasons ago one of our lads got hit by an offie, a quickish offie, but a spinner non the less, and went down like a sack of spuds. Dry-heaved, cried, sat on his knees for a full 2 or 3 minutes and eventually limped off the field and retired hurt.

Once he was ok someone said to him "Did it really hurt you that much, it was only the spinner..."

"I put my box on wrong", he replied.

"You put it on wrong? How can you put a box on wrong? What did you do, leave a bollock hanging out!?"

"... yep"

The mental image is unfortunately burned into my mind.

I took the most painful caught and bowled of my life a few years back.

I bowled one that was nailed back incredibly hard. I had no time to get out the way or to try and stop it. It hit me square in the nadz and I accidentally caught it trying to, well I don't know what I was trying to do really.
I went off in agony, my eyes were watering, I was sick, I didn't know whether to sit or stand (as it was agony whatever) and my left testicle still isn't the same to this day!

Finally found some batting form last year and got promoted up the order to help fill a shortage for the 2nds. Come out at number 6 to face the oppo's skipper, got forward for a block a bit too well and quickly found the ball pitching and going right up under my box (IE completely missed the box itself and straight into my plums). I ended up on the floor for a good 5 minutes before finally deciding to get back up and soldier on, I lasted another over of desperately trying to get off strike due to inability to breath or see from the pain before I finally decided "sack it" and left a straight one, bowled out for 2.

Skipper wouldn't let me sit out fielding so I had to do 40 overs at fine leg/mid off (my normal position unless i'm feeling confident, then I take sweeper/gully) in absolute agony, afterwards I went straight to A&E for scan in that area no 4 of the year (cancer scare earlier in the year). Luckily everything was just bruised so I spent 3 days on codeine and ruined about 3 kilos' worth of frozen peas in the process.

I ended up completely losing my batting form and ability to play leg side balls (strange, considering the ball to the plums came from an off stump line) and i'm only just recovering any decent form at the crease as of tonight's nets.

Not cricket related but......

I went to the toilet in the middle of the night, unbeknown to me the seat lid was down, and I sat on my balls. Hurt a lot and I woke up a few neighbours.

Participating in a Tae Kwon Do tournament some years back, the guy I was fighting roshamboed me good and proper, even though I was wearing a box. A full on kick to the nuts. I went down like a sack of potatoes and I was given five minutes to recover, where the ref grabbed me under the armpits, and proceeded to "shake them back down". I then went out and kicked the other guy like he deserved it and he ran away complaining. Still... It's never fun!

When I did martial arts I had a box that you had to wear like a solid version of a jock strap, hated wearing it though, made me kick like one of those cheap action figures you see in Poundland.

I've been involved in 2 matches when a player has been hit in this region.

First occasion I was bowling when the batsman attempted a slog/sweep but didn't properly connect and instead sent the ball high down to deep square leg. I think the ground was uneven (a small dip) which caused the fielder to completely misjudge his catching attempt and unfortunately the ball landed right exactly where he didn't want it to land. He was in a very bad way and had to take a number of days off work.

Second time was playing a Sunday 1st XI Cup match and the bowler appeared to take one in the lower stomach area but seemed more annoyed he had missed a C&B (than injured) and continued his over then went down to fine leg. Perhaps a minute later, I heard some people shouting from boundary and looked around to see aforementioned bowler now laid out motionless. He was out cold (delayed shock I assume) and an ambulance was called although I think he had regained consciousness by the time it arrived.

A couple of weeks ago whilst coaching I was using my sidearm against the best batsman in my u15s, probably the best bat in the colts, who is a Bucks opener and bats above me in the 1sts and 2nds at the moment. Out on the square on a flat and fairly slow track, went for a cross seamed ball to make it jump and test him. Unfortunately it did jump, and also cut in sharply past the inside edge, and apparently caused him significant discomfort. I think it toughened him up though, he's got four half centuries since, including his first for the county and 96 from 58 playing for the club u17s.

Week before that I was keeping in an 8 a side tournament, and was standing up to a medium pacer. Had taken a couple cleanly, and then one managed to nip under my gloves and cracked me on the box. Was a bit breathless for a while, was glad I'd remembered my box!

In early winter nets this year I was in a 'hit everything' mood so took a wild swing at a wide one from one of our quicker bowlers.

I bottom edged it and the ball proceeded to bounce down and up - right behind my box & square in the nuts from below.

going down like a sack of spuds doesn't do it justice!

On cricket tour last year I was fielding at short mid off. Feeling less than 100% due to two days on the sauce and a torn ligament in my knee, I perhaps wasn't as sharp as I could have been. As it was tour, pretty much everyone gets a bowl and one of our guys was attempting his offies. He's looped one up, the batsman has come running down the track and absolutely melted it straight at me. I didn't have time to do anything other than let it hit my right testicle and catch it against myself. Managed to hold it, but the pain was instant. I could barely move and only managed to stand up after about 5 minutes or so where I gingerly made my way to slip for the last 2 overs.

I was in a lot of pain for the next 2 days, I had 3 different unlucky doctors examine my hugely swollen gonad and an ultrasound. Luckily there was to no serious damage other than swelling, but it's still much bigger than it used to be 10 months later.

Still, at least everyone (including myself if I'm honest) got a decent laugh out of it!

I think the worst ones are those delayed action 'ticklers' - you know - the ones you think you've got away with due to lack of obviously serious impact - but then the pain arrives... :o

I hit a forum member (@finbarr44) in his, well member whilst backing up my shy that the stumps some 8 years ago. Skidding the ball in off the astro turf wicket lead to the throw gaining pace and hitting him flush in the middle stump. He has been fielding with a box on ever since! Sorry Fin!
