Hi All,

I recently bought SF bat played in my first net and found the bat has developed the crack. please see the picture below.

when I receive the bat, I put anti scuff sheet on the face and edges. after putting the scuff sheet, I oiled the bat on the rest of the area(back, remaining edges etc..) I was advised to do so by the shopkeeper.  after partially olied, I knocked the bat for atleast 3-4 hours. I and assumed my bat is ready to playing in the nets. I took the bat to the net and I think the ball hit the edges and developed the crack.

could you please assist me how do I fix/repair this ? would I treat this bat as defective ?

Glue it using a pva glue. Put some tape on it it's not defective mate it the face you hit the ball on the edge and it cracked it happens no matter how much you knock in or use it can happen ball 1 or last ball of the bats life.

What are you using to knock it it as the edges don't appear to be rounded very much. If you are using a ball on a stick then chuck it out as its useless. Have a look at these videos and guides and tell us if this is what you have done.

Thank you for your reply. I will use PVA glue to stick it. and put additional tape on it when its dry.

I used heavy mallet to knocking in. for the edges, I followed following video from itsjustcricket and as you have mentioned above. :

Thank you so much for your reply. I will knock in more on the edges.... shall I knock in with mallet on 45 degrees on edges ?

Yes knock the edges in at an  angle ideally knocking in should be done prior to applying scuff  looking at the bat I think the edges could have had more knocking in before use but that said it may not have prevented the cracking yes apply PVA and tape it tight with parcel tape leave for 24 hours remove parcel tape and clean of any excess residue. I would then apply a strip of edge tape vertically over the crack and on both edges.

last year i bought a gray nicolls..knocked for weeks ,15-20 min( inc. edges) everyday ...but after only a few weeks usage it developed a similiar crack to yours...first i removed the scuff sheet ..opened the  crack using a small screw driver(make sure u dont open up too much) ,filled with a local wood adhesive and let it dry overnight ...there are two usual suspects...not so great quality balls,,,overdried willow...Whatever the reason i couldn't ask the club bowlers to change their balls   ...so i decided to treat for overdried willow symptoms...decided to give the face a coat of oil..it soaked up the oil within  minutes ..so decided to give another  coat and that  too disappeared within  half an hour ..only the fourth coat stayed overnight ...so i guess it was an overdried willow..but i also feared whether  i have over oiled it..it sounded a bit dead initially so i whacked for another 2/3 weeks..and gradually it started to openup..performing better  than ever..its still going good and crack is holding up...the bat now looks dark and untidy and has no scuff sheet but it performing..which i paid for ..this was my experiment with a overdried willow and i insist you should consult some experts on this forum b4 doing anything..

cheers mate for sharing your experience. I think you are right my willow was dry as I did not oiled it before knocking in. I was thinking if I put scuff-face sheet, I do not need to oil the bat but it seems that I was wrong. I will follow above advice and will share my results. thank you.

Long story short a surface crack has developed vertically following the grain up from the toe to 2/3 of the way up (didnt realise it was cracking cause of edge tape). Ive almost sanded the crack out of the bat, my question is if i sand the crack out will that fix my surface crack problem or will it be a weak spot in the wood were it will always happen now (p.s the edge that had the crack running up the grain was heart wood if that matters)

Surface cracks are a good thing from what I understand.

If surface crack is actual on the grain and if it's vertical that means the willow is nicely opening up .. It is a good sign. Post some pictures and we can confirm ...
