Match play
« on: July 18, 2015, 08:58:54 PM »

After being a bowler that got the yips, I can't bowl anymore! No idea why - I can bowl slow stuff, but can't get proper bowling down the other end so not effective!

I've therefore started back off at the bottom in our 3rd team as a batsman - few 20s etc, but I don't make the runs I feel I should. In nets I'm absolutely fine and always have been. Everyone at the club and that has watched me in nets (inc our Overseas) thinks I should be playing a higher standard (either our 1sts or a different league). Yet in a game, as soon as I walk to the middle, I don't get the runs I feel (and others feel) I have the ability to get. I've tried thinking "get off the mark" - check - "get to five" - check - etc etc and I've also tried other mental tricks.!

Nothing works at all! Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

I'm the same. Top order batsmen (1-3) yet I've only had one score of 50+ (64*) and the rest have been 35 or under this season. This season has been the most confident I've felt batting (apart from today's game where I just couldn't hit it off the square, first single figure score for 6 matches), yet I have almost nothing to show for my best season. I'm the highest run scorer in the 3's, yet haven't had the opportunity to move into the 2's, which even if I did, I would be down the order, so thats annoying.
One thing I've found this year is to just take my time as the runs will accumulate. The longer I'm batting for, the more likely it is that I'm going to get runs. Unfortunately there's always going to be someone who can just hit runs much faster than I do. Just don't rush if things aren't going your way.

Thanks Buzz I'll have a read! Sure I've seen that floating about a few times on the forum so must be good!! Hopefully it'll work!! If it does, I'll let you all know haha!!

Issue is, I either score or don't..! No 50s yet, but 30s, 20s etc not out or almost none! It's not good enough for me! Another issue is I'm used to quicker bowling - even as a tail end (number 8-9) bat for the 1s when I could bowl; even top order 3s it's so slow!

Is it as simple as concentration then?

I'm in a similar boat, getting 20s and 30s but never pushing on and I know for me it's concentration. I'm a slow scorer so 30 usually means I've been out there 20 overs (I know, very slow) and after 1hr 30 at the crease, focussing on every ball the same way you watched the first one, I'm sure that's what gets me out.

I've heard this said before, in fact I've even said myself in the past about getting used to quicker bowling and then struggling against the dibbly dobbleys, but then the better players I know don't seem to have a problem. I personally think this about experience, have you been playing long? Spent a lot off time at the crease? Decision making, adjusting to the conditions, adjusting to variations in the bowling I think can only come with experience. This is where I am now after playing 3-4 years, technically I'm OK, in the nets I can rub shoulders with the best of them at my club but in a match situation I've got a lot of learning to do.

I don't think you can teach yourself to be better from a book though, all about trial and error on the playing field IMO.

If you have only got 30 off 20 overs - I think you need to work on getting more singles and twos otherwise you are making life hard for yourself. You are scoring effectively about a run off every 2 balls -  even just trying to get that to 2 off 3 balls will help you.

not sure I agree - your issues are entirely mental - having a plan to score against the slow seam up stuff will help you. I try to move across my crease to change the line of the bowler which makes them have to do something different, which they struggle with. And yes you can get that from a book ;)

This would be good, I know, but how? I feel like the only way I could turn what are currently dots into singles would be rather than pushing balls back to the bowler, turning them square of the wicket, at which point I end up playing across the line and get out.

Playing straight was a huge unnatural uncomfortable hurdle for me to cross and I do it by intesely focussing on doing it, which means usually playing it straight and gently to the bowler.
