Lovely Butterfly at 2'9
« on: July 30, 2015, 03:48:30 PM »

Hunts Butterfly bat with a lovely chunky profile and fantastic pickup. Stunning grains with a stain right in the playing area.

2'9 and a half, including toe guard.

£135 posted in the UK (this is the price not an invitation to barter, sorry to be rude but it saves offence later)

I've seen plenty of people pay much more for a 'grade 1 butterfly' so this represents a bargain.

This or anything similar still available?  If so what is the edge size and spine height?

I've never had one, is there any difference in performance/durability etc? Not ruled out getting one just not thought about it tbh.

Used to own one sold it on eBay dispite plenty of knocking in found it to be hard in the butterfly area which affected the ping also butterfly willow tends to be heavier.
Graiding wise It's the poorest quality willow.

Could it be that it was just a crap bat and that had nothing to do with a butterfly? I've owned or used 4, 3 by top batmakers (B3/Aldred) and one eBay blank. The eBay one was a plank, yes, but I don't think that had a lot to do with it being a butterfly! The b3/Aldred bats are all superb, with the Aldred the stain isn't in the playing area but on one b3 it was and it absolutely flew off the stain. All around 2lb10 and they're all very large bats.

Yes some butterfly willow bats are poor, some are excellent. Same as all other bats really! Don't go slating them all. I'm sure this one will be a good stick as Hunts know what they're doing!

HOw much knocking/preparation did you do of your butterfly? My butterfly turned out to be an OK bat, not great. I use it in nets only where balls are cheap and deck is hard.

I think it really depends on the batmaker. Both my B3 and Hunts butterflyies are very nice and I've scored runs with them very efficiently. Better batsmen have scored runs even more efficiently. I've not really knocked either of them in, aside from protecting the edges and toe with a bit of bath rolling and some proper toe belting.

The butterfly bat was a custom made made for me by well known  top batmaker it was not as you put c---p just hard dispite many hours knocking in  as for slating them all the post was more about identifying that Butterfly willow is the lowest grade willow denser and heavier for the guy who  asked the question.                                                                                               Also Yet to see one that pings the same a bat made from a low density cleft.

You don't see many Butterfly bats in retail outlets as they are not purchased by the wider cricket public.
As for grade one Butterfly willow IMO that's just marketing.

I agree with the grade 1 butterfly remark, a butterfly should really just be a butterfly.
I haven't had a bad one yet. The 2 aldreds I use now are great, one multigrainer that is lovely and the other would need a set of beer goggles to be even looked at but goes like the clappers. Ive had 5 b3s in various shapes and weights and they all seem to hit hard and true out of the stain.
