£10,000 is a hefty fine for drink driving. I thought it was normally a few hundred quid. Unless in that he is paying costs for repair on the vehicle he hit as his insurance probably won't cover the damage as he was under the influence of alcohol.

The fines are means tested I believe, so the more you earn the more you have to pay.

No it's a straight fine, no compensation. It's so high because he won't be in the country to compete any kind of community service.

No toleration to this kind of thing.

Would be interested to know if he has an English licence, not a big matter I know but if average Joe went to Aussie, he would be expected to change licences.

A foreigner can use a non UK driving licence for upto 12 months. I would imagine similar rules apply for short term visitors to Australia.
