In praise of Chris Rodgers
« on: August 19, 2015, 07:26:13 AM »

Last Test match coming up for one the most likeable and respected Australian cricketers of recent times.
Bit of a throw back to more traditional opening batsman rather than the more aggressive style of younger players.
He will be missed by Australia but hopefully Middlesex will see him on the field for a couple more years.

Couldn't agree more, Australia must be wishing they could get another few years out of him, quality batsman.

Someone just tweeted that only Waugh border and hussey have scored more runs for aus after the age of 35!!

That's a decent stay for rodgers!

He's done pretty well and can only fathom what retring as the next serious in England is 3 years away, and that's what his game is mainly geared for.,Our conditions.

If I was the young and up coming aus batsmen, I'd be looking for a county for the next 2 seasons atleast.

doesnt even have to be a county,

get a contract as a pro, play on spongy green seamers.

you learn far more playing on league wickets than county wickets

can't help thinking he has a couple more years left in him, hardly failing at the moment. Surprised he didn't want to continue for at least the aussie summer. Taken him so long to play test cricket.

I think those dizzy spells he was having maybe have got to him a bit.  Knowing the stresses and effort he's had to go though this summer to fight for his team, he maybe feels he cant or doesn't want to replicate it every series beyond this one - maybe the risk factor taking an edge off his determination. Brilliant old school opener and earnt a lot of respect in UK.  Least he has his ashes tour package business as a back up ...... oh wait!!!!!

haha!! I would think Middlesex will have him back,he just made a right hash the 'hospitality packages'!!
He likes it over here and has been a terrific player for Middlesex over the last few years.
You never know of course but a couple of whacks on the head perhaps made his mind up he was getting too slow for the pace at test level.
Hope he plays on in County cricket for a couple of years.

Think being hit 2/3 times in the head in the space of a few months has a lot to do with it. Also good to see a player ending on a high instead of carrying on till he's dropped and then retire

Sad to see him go, he's been one of my favourite batsmen to watch over the last few years. He doesn't have the flair of someone like Warner, but his technique is incredibly solid. I guess on the plus side for him, he's leaving at the top of his game, so he (and everyone else) will remember himself batting at a world class level in his last series. I reckon there's a lot of batsmen who wish they pulled the pin earlier instead of holding on until they lost their form.

Maybe he might not like all of those involved in the current set up

You might have a point there!!
Gut feeling after the oval there may be some players able to speak more freely...
