Abandoned game - bad light.
« on: August 22, 2015, 08:59:04 PM »

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on deliberately getting games abandoned due to bad light?

Twice this season we have been in strong positions batting 2nd. Whilst conditions in both games were poor, our batsmen were relatively comfortable batting.

In both games, the opposition have been warned by the umpires that they cannot bring a quick bowler on. On both occasions their skipper has given the ball to their quick bowler and the umpires have walked off the field.

From a league point of view, I'm not sure if we have any grounds for complaints as i understand it is umpires prerogative to determine if the game can be considered dangerous.

I guess it is made particularly frustrating as we are in need of points with a relegation battle on our hands and every point is precious.

My thoughts are that the cricket world is full of people that don't actually want to play the game.

theres the ones that text on a Friday night to see if games of because tomorrow's forecast isnt brill.

There the same ones that text you to see if it's cancelled 5mins after it starts spitting 4 hrs before the game starts.

There's the people that when it rains 30mins into a game with still 7 hours available to complete fetch the stumps in with them and start locking up cos "we'll never get back on now"

I even had the oppo phone me up to try and cancel the game 1hr 15 mins before the game was due to start because "my radar app shows rain half way through game and we don't want to ruin our wicket so you okay to cancel".
No I'm bloody not!

Too true - I think the same can be applied to umpires at the end of the day.

Once they have the money in their pocket they are more than happy to have early finish.

Maybe try bowling your overs quicker? Just a thought.

Clubs also leave it till saturday  to cancel when they know around Thursday they will not be able to raise a side  they have listened to the weather forcast and hope for rain and then cancel and get a share of the points and 2 they hope you can't raise a side and cancel and are awarded maximum points.

From an opposition perspective if you are playing limited overs for the bowlers, they might not have anyone else who can bowl. Why should they let some part timers bowl just so you can chase down a total you might not have got to otherwise?

We've had that this morning.

Oppo phoned up at 9.30 and asked our Sunday skipper how pitch was. "Covers are on and drainage is good, the sun we've had already has more or less dried it"

His reply

"Oh right, well we've only got 7 so gonna have to forfeit"

I'd say it's got more to do with people playing to win at all costs. How you win is irrelevant as long as you can finish on the winning  side. Rather than just playing the game, if you lose because of bowling some part timers due to light then oh well.. Not like it matters

We played on an unsuitable pitch yesterday. The ground was absolutely water logged, but because we are bottom of the league and only had 9 players they wanted the points. They hounded the umps to get it on, we played 10 overs then came off as our bowlers were struggling to stay on their feet! We came off and the oppo were going crazy saying we didn't want to play! I wasn't amused at this as my wife had given birth at 02:40 on Saturday morning! I had gone wanting to play and made it well known to their skipper.

We got back on and as our bowlers were scared to run in hard we got hit for a few, it dried out just enough to not really affect their bowlers and we got comfortably beaten.

If they had been playing the top of the league instead of us they would've called it off without doubt

Classic win at all costs attitude, the win was more important than the game.
