I felt this was a very interesting article, with a few interesting points from someone whom I consider a bit of an average spinner.

Looking it it, people that I would consider pure spin-bowlers in a side, don't seem to be getting 4 day games this season -

Kerigan @ Lancs, Tredwell and Riley @ Kent, Patel @ Middx, Briggs @ Hants and probably a few more. As Rayner says in his article, most that are getting picked seem to be batting spinners, with a second string to their bow - as if they can't be picked purely for their spinning ability - Rashid, Borthwick, Rayner, Dawson, Anasari, Samit Patel are all examples.

Perhaps there is something on the way we schedule, prepare for and captain our 4 day games that is leading to the paucity of international quality, attacking spinners?

Rashid would get into the Yorkshire side if he could not hold a bat so that's a complete misnomer.  The others you're probably right about.

Not playing first class cricket over the Summer Holidays doesn't really help - the eight weeks when skies are warm and clear and pitches are dry and dusty are the perfect time for spinners to prosper.  If you start the season knowing you ain't going to be playing in those conditions, why would you not look for someone who can hold up an end instead?

But those 2 (arguable) examples do not disprove the general suggestion.

Where are all the wicket-taking spinners?

I dont think the traditional non batting spinner will come back in fashion at all,most have to bat these days.
One of our colts plays for Kent and i'm sure he has spent lots of time working on his batting(hes a left arm spinner).
Ravi patel at middlesex possibly the only out and out specialist i can think of and does not play much.
Do away with the heavy roller and even wickets uncovered?
I play against guys who turn it square in league cricket
Leave the wicket to the elements i say!

Most notable exception is Nathan Lyon in the Australian side.

I'd also argue that there are few county captains who know how to captain a spinner, and how best to use them, so even when they do play, most are afraid that they'll leak easy runs and don't get bowled like they should be.

Which is what happens with Borthwick at Durham. We play with Borthwick and Pringle as spinners but rarely bowl Borthwick because Pringle is tighter than Borthwick. But it is a common point that leg spinners will go for runs but will take wickets, it seems though Collingwood isn't willing to take that risk.

Yes he would.   We don't need his batting - our other bowling options include Bresnan, Plunkett and Patterson who can all bat, and our top six are almost all international players!  His bowling suits our style of cricket and he'd be in the side even if he came in XI.  Quite aside from which, our other spinners are hardly al rounders - Middlebrook has not scored a run since he came back and Carver is an old fashioned rabbit!
