Nets bat for someone coming back to criccket
« on: October 02, 2015, 02:03:53 PM »

OK I'm old (in my 40s) and although I was decent enough as a kid at cricket I haven't played since my teens.

Anyway I am thinking of doing some nets sessions and therefore need a bat.  I've been looking at ebay but I thought I would ask if anyone has any recommendations for a cheapish...half decent bat.

Regarding weight - I'm not sure tbh so I am thinking I will just try something cheap, try it and take it from there.

Bit vague I know but on the off chance someone has been in a similar position I thought I would ask.

Thanks alot

welcome.. the more oldies we have on the forum the better. Yes we need toilet breaks as the old bladder gets worse as we get older but HEY? what price experience?

this forum is not a good place to buy anything, before you know it there will be 15 bats turning up with the postie before you realise you cannot possibly use them all.

Anyhow, I would start off with an ebay second hand job before you really get back into playing. Do you need a lighter bat as the old reflexes have gone a bit? yes, well I certainly do anyway..

So pick something lightish and off you go.
If you do go the ebay route and have any doubts about what you are buying just pop it on here and the forum police can sniff out a fake bat/seller-quicker than you can say 'IVA Richards is god'

good luck and welcome

I'm younger but for getting back into it just bought a cheap kashmir Kookaburra for £10. Done the job for giving it all a go again and I'll look further come the new ranges being released...

wow thanks alot guys - I'll take a look at the MSRs and also the cheap ebay second hand options - will flag if I find anything of interest although i do note there is the ebay thread so got my eyes on that as well.

I am going to do a couple of the net sessions at the oval to start to see how I get on...then I am told I can join a group of like minded (and standard) people to play with next year.

I have to say it has been sparked by my 2 lads taking up cricket - brought back some fond memories!

Thanks for all the help

....Saying that....the MSRs weren't as cheap as I expected!

So to me the second hand option looks best - what about something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151833737636?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT ?

Go down your nearest sports direct and pick up every bat till you find one you like. Cheap option, will give you an idea of your ideal weight for when you  inevitably upgrade :)

I'd go with Sports Direct online one of the two fusion models of Slazenger, plus their softs aren't that bad either.

I think I missed the boat on that as I did go to one and it had all of two bats on display

Problem is they're all in your weight range, Chris.
Us mere mortals couldn't lift them!
