There are 2 B3's on ebay for £50, I'd go for them personally

Alternatively look out for some secondhand bats on here,

One BIG BIG issue with the MSR net bats is that I've seen 3 or 4 break within a year! I think they've broken in various places, some from shoulder to toe, some at the handle along the width of the bat. This could be down to poor usage, bad balls, lack of preparation, etc etc, but having witnessed so many in a short period is a little concerning! I would recommend either a Sports Direct bargain, or something off the sponsors on here, like a Butterfly grade Aldred or B3 for under £140. I think @Vitas Cricket has some bats on end of season sale, so maybe contact them. It's all entirely down to your budget! Would recommend something other than a dirt cheap MSR though...

Wouldn't buy a bat just yet couldn't you borrow one or go into a sports shop pick up what they have and give them a swing how does it feel then hold the bat in your stance with a batting glove on if possible with your top hand only and ask yourself gain  how it feels to heavy to light  or just right can I stay balanced and control the bat what  you are doing is establishing  your wieght range  and bat profle also where's the middle high or low.
If you can doing so  will help you find a bat suitable for you to use prior to purchasing  rather than buying a bat and hoping it will suit you.

Just echoing all the advice here, just find the cheapest English willow bat you can buy - dont buy Kashmir they dont rebound as well which means that the ball doesnt travel that far which also means that your confidence will drop. Like everyone said buy a light bat ( under 2.9 ). You should be looking to spend no more than 50 quid.

I was the same last season - 46, hadn't played since my teens but was persuaded to play for the local team so that I could play in the same team as my 13 year old son. Picked up a couple of nice second hand bats (a Salix and a B3) on eBay for £35 each.

My dad did that back when I took up cricket. Problem was I soon overtook him and played in teams higher pretty much straight away, so only played about 10 games were played together

Oh yeah - I'm sure that'll happen pretty soon - just going to enjoy it while I can.Think he'll be in the same team as me for a season or two.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've decided to hold fire until I can get to a shop and try some bats for weight.  Then I will go the ebay route so will keep an eye out for something on there.

When I get to the nets, if possible I will try some other peoples bats to compare.

Then once I know what I want I can go and splash some proper cash .... but until then I will stick with the bargain basement approach.

Cheers
