Need to bat 5 sessions to save a test match and Ali only has that much patience before wafting at one!

Not good enough, not a test opener, and if he's still doing it for match 3 it'll be same old England just different name as coach.

Well hopefully Hales will at least get a game before South Africa then, that was incredibly poor. Ali back down to the tail where he belongs, although unfortunately that probably means no Taylor.

I guess this highlights the rather obvious cracks that the Ashes temporarily papered over...

Surely Buttler will go too and Bairstow will wear the gloves:

Cook, Hales, Taylor, Root, Stokes, Bairstow (wk), Ali, Rashid, Wood, Broad, Anderson.

Taylor is a class batsman from what I've seen of him over here in Aus

Tail starting at 5 :(

Those who thought the ashes win was the start of a golden era are looking a bit sheepish now. Ashes was a poor series, two poor teams.

Cook injury has to be a worry for England, mayes had a bad back for a while though. Same with root

If root opened with cook. It'd start at 3!!

We really don't have more than the two consistent world class batsmen at mo do we?

Stokes is the biggest disappointment to me, Perth vs Johnstone he looked a class above. Where's that stokes gone!

Root has shown he's not an opener. Maybe those innings from stokes are flukes ?

Yeah I'd rather Bairstow at 5 but I'm sure keepers hate batting that high in the orders in a test (apart from AB?). Stokes can handle the blade well though, could otherwise drop Bell to 5 and axe a bowler like Rashid or Wood? Who else is on tour as a batsman? I agree with Smilley, after seeing Stokes being a cut above on the bouncy, seaming WACA wicket against Johnson, Harris and Siddle I'm left wondering where that form went?

I'm sure anyone who looked at the numbers would have also realised how poor the Ashes series was, apart from Root, Cook, Smith and Rogers there weren't many solid batsman. England won the series with Lyth, Bell and Buttler in the lineup.
