Compton being treated very unfairly in my view. All because of one supposed "argument"?
What argument?

Here's another interesting article back:-

Agree to be honest, Hales deserves a good go but if he doesn't come off (which I hope he does!) then another solid opener would be a good move - don't think we need to worry about slow starts when we have the potential for such a free scoring middle order.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/933816.html

"...the collapse in Dubai on the third morning was recognisable, a scene that is as much of a signature to a Pakistan-England contest as the extended single shot is to a Brian de Palma film.

Pace at one end, usually serious; legspin at the other; and in the middle, splayed and akimbo, England. Fast Man and the Leggie (said no badmazing '80s film poster ever); Wahab and Yasir; Shoaiby and Dani; Waz, or Vicky (but preferably Waz) and Mushy; Imran and Qadir..."

Noooooooooooooo!

Trevor Baylis just told bbc tms that Ali will open in the thrid test!

They are discussing weather buttler needs a rest though.

One wrong decision, and merely discussing the other. It's painful being an English fan.

Purely on stats getting rid of Compton was a wrong call and short sighted at the time,  He was chopped because the Eng management wanted Root to.open, they put all their eggs in roots basket and have been paying for it ever since. Stats aside he has looked the most comfortable partner to cook over the last 2years. I suspect if Eng had retained him we wouldn't be having this discussion. I don't think Hales is the answer, but they should play him as he is there. Havinv said that I don't see why they can't bring Compton back in.

slightly more positive news is that Root is now back at the top of the ICC test batting rankings

interesting that Broad is ranked higher than Stokes as an all-rounder

Buttler doesn't need a rest, he needs to be dropped and told to learn how to bat in test cricket.

Trevor Baylis just told bbc tms that Ali will open in the thrid test!

If that is true then I suspect that one of two things will happen!

1. Ali will hit a decent knock and Baylis will say what a good pick he is!

2. Ali will fail as an opener again, and will have to be moved down the order where he should really be anyway!

If 1, then Ali will open in SA and be very much found out against the likes of Steyn!!
If 2, and Hales is moved in to open, then it's a lot to ask for Hales to face that quality in his first International Test!!

What a mess!!  :(

Dont think the SA pace attack is to be feared so much any more, but given how he played the Sri Lankan and Indian pacers, Morne Morkel will take Moeen's head off.

i dont think there is anyway Ali can open in SA he isnt good enough against a decent seam bowling pack. he should be batting at 7/8 but im also not convinved he is a decent spin bowler to get in the side, although he is one of the best we currently have.

whoever opens against SA is going to be thrown in against a very decent attack. similarly in a way the Adam lyth should of been given a go away in the Windies rather then waiting until the start of the English summer with no game practice

Ali will open in last test as England like to give batsmen a good go even if not right

Its only bowlers they chop and change not the protected species of batsmen

They made the same mistake in WI not playing Lyth and Rashid and they are doing the same thing here with Hales

Whether he is good enough or not you won't know till you play him as Tresco and Vaughn did not have best of first class records before getting in England side so worth a go

If I were in charge of England,

1. Keep Butler (too risky giving JB the gloves - may affect his batting), BUT tell him to play like a t20. Innovate and play some unorthodox shots vs the spinners (Sarfraz Ahmed did this to completely neutralize Herath vs SL)
2. Everyone else needs to graft his innings - learn from Cook, Root and Rashid
3. Have Ian Bell open with Cook (its a quick fix, but Ali is just no good up there)
4. Consider dropping Rashid for Samit, or a pacer - he's currently not good enough to trouble Pak (Abu Dhabi was aberration - Pakistan basically self destructed...won't happen again).
