Feel for wood having a chronic injury, hopefully plunkett gets the nod. Taylor for the woeful Buttler. Would like to see the back of Ali as well but I think he's untouchable for some reason

Ali can do a decent job for England....but not opening the batting!

Fat lad Botham been hitting the sauce big time...

Rashid has been buffet. I don't know what variation Rashid will use to spook Pakistan. Long hops or full pitch?

if its a spinning track, they need to bring in samit patel (replace ali). not sure why everyone has forgotten Pakistan's abysmal record against left arm spin.

Replacing Moeen is a daft plan. Bat him at 5 or 6 where he should be and he will score runs and take wickets.

As mentioned once or twice he isn't an opening bat.

According to cook, Ali will still be opener for tomorrow. Looks like Taylor is getting a game too

Ali is a conundrum - he isn't the best spinner in the country by a long chalk but...all the ones that are better are either in their late 30s (Batty), horribly one dimensional misfits(Panesar, Kerrigan), or leg spinners.  Yes, Rashid is a better bowler in second innings conditions but England have made it clear that they are not prepared to use their pace attack the way Yorkshire do to protect him early doors and see him as the second spinner so...

What would you do?  Ali is a decent counterattacking number 6-8 in international cricket (okay, if I were being pedantic I'd say so will Rashid be in time), doesn't let anyone down in the field and has improved markedly as a bowler.  For the time being, especially in English conditions where seam is more prevalent, he does a job and does it reasonably well.  Whether he should be in the team in Australia next time round (no - he'd get murdered) or even in South Africa (no - four seamers plus Rashid is plenty) is a different matter.  Mid term, I suspect the hope is that Ansari lives up to early promise and gives them the option of a more solid version of this six man attack, taking Ali's spot.

Bigger problem here is that England are about to extend the Jonny Bairstow problem.  Whats the betting poor Jonny gets shunted down to seven despite doing well at five just because that's where the keeper bats, goddamn it.   Since coming back into the team he's done well (better than anyone outside Cook and Root, that is to say) but this move will result in us still not knowing what his role should be or if he is quite good enough.

Horrendously written, I thought Bairstow was already playing!

Pakistan v England: Jos Buttler dropped and Jonny Bairstow in

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has been dropped for the third Test against Pakistan in Sharjah.

Yorkshires' Jonny Bairstow, 26, will replace Buttler while England have further strengthened their batting line-up with James Taylor making his first Test appearance in three years.

Buttler, 25, has struggled with the bat in the three-match series, averaging 8.5 runs from four innings.

The final Test begins on Sunday with England 1-0 down in the series.

England fast bowler Mark Wood has beenrested for the match to protect a chronic ankle problem.

Captain Alastair Cook will make a call later on whether to play a third spinner or an extra seamer but is not contemplating making any more than two changes.

More to follow.

I can only assume Taylor goes in at 5 and Bairstow drops down to 7?

Never mind the batting order! It will be irrelevant if Cook doesn't win the toss and bat first!

Tough this - Bairstow really deserves to stay at five.  I'd be inclined to get JT to open and move Ali down.

Sod it, leave Ali to open in sa as it'll finally quiet the Ali brigade who think he's in the best six test batsmen in England

More worried about Bluey getting a fair chance to nail down his spot, rather than being moved down to be replaced by GoldenJos as soon as is deemed fit having already lost his batting spot.

Taylor St 5 or 6 is good, it's where he should bat and will hopefully hit runs so goodenjos can't retake the spot
