My first attempt at shaping
« on: October 15, 2015, 08:17:33 PM »

Hi guys,

Regular reader don't often post, after hours of watching bat making videos and looking at other forum members attempts I decided to have a go myself. I picked up an ugly grade 3, and then a few cheap tools of Ebay and off i went. I used a Sorby draw knife, a Stanley plane and a wooden spokeshave. Luckily a friend of mine who is into woodwork let me borrow a round bottom plane to have a go at some concaving. He also advised me on sanding and let me use his sander. I bound the handle by hand which was painful, time consuming and messy. The cleft was full size and hadn't been machined down so there was a lot of wood to take off! I've left the toe quite thick and will be using the bat as a ball machine/net bat, think it weighs around 2'12 but don't have any scales so just an estimate. Once again the uploading picture function has got the better of me, but please take a look any feedback good or bad appreciated.

That's a job well done. I think you have great skills, that looks like a good bat, finishing, make & profile looks good for someone starting up with batmaking.

Cheers for the feedback guys! pickup isn't too bad tried a bit of a duckbill profile which from what i've read is meant to assist with pickup.
