New Helmet - Visibility
« on: October 19, 2015, 09:22:56 AM »

Hi all

I am slightly old school when it comes to lids, when i was younger :D there were no rules on helmets and i have grown up playing a decent standard but not wearing a helmet. Occasionally when there was a 85+ mph known bowler i stuck on my 2005 Masuri but always found it heavy and i played poorly as affected my vision as i wasnt used to it.

Next season after promotion we will be up against some decent quickies and also i have found myself when facing the occasional quicky that hooking/pulling i am (obviously) looking to get head to one side of the ball to avoid any disasters. This has resulted in missed opportunities and also twice gloving it to keeper.

So for next season i am looking for a new helmet, lightweight, decent protection but also as much as possibly not reducing visibility. So far i have looked at the Albion Ultimate 98 and also the newer Masuri Vision range and the elite titanium one with the double bar as it is meant to improve vision. Just wondering if there is a well known lid that offers the above or whether i am after the moon on a stick and compromises needed?

Thanks

Lots of discussion about new helmets on the forum, @Maverick79 recently done a nice review of both Masuri and Shrey lids, hopefully it'll help

If it's vision you're after, then nothing beats @Ayrtek in my opinion.

Just a quick one - is it a particular Ayrtek model?

Seems the new model is the AdiPower Premiertek Titanium? or is it the older Premium one? Or doesn't it matter as design same for visibility good across range?

Owning both a Masuri Elite Vision Series and 2 Ayrtek RAW and an Ayrtek Elite, I find the Ayrtek to be the best mix of lightweight and vision, but the Masuri is also a very good helmet. Being between 25-35% lighter though, it sounds like an Ayrtek lid would be ideal for you. Will pop up a review of both lids soon, I feel that both have their unique advantages over each other. :)

With regards to the vision, it won't make a difference which model you go for as they're all the same in design - the weights/fit does vary depending on the model however so it's worth taking a look at. They're all lighter than the Masuri's though so you can't go too wrong!

As mentioned by quite a few people, once the Masuri has been worn for a while, any weight differences compared to other brands is soon forgotten.

One thing I am note too sure about is whether the Ayrtek models confirm to the new safety standards? Perhaps someone could clarify this please...

Thanks for the positive comments re the helmets.

The current range hasnt passed the BS 7928:2013 but the new one will.

We have tried to keep the weight on them to a minimum whilst still meeting the new requirements, initial weights will be in the region of 930g for the steel model.

Sounds good. Will there be an Ayrtek neck guard too?

Its not something we have looked at in terms of R&D TBH as we were told that our current UK distributor wouldn't range it even if we did design one.

Interesting, surprised the distributor took that stance really!

I've got the new Masuri vision, found any issues with vision and weight weren't at all noticeable after the first net or two.
