Cracking read. Very interesting insight into something I didn't even know was a problem.

Not sell them for £150 without a guarantee...

Well explained doc, have had plenty of these in the last 12 months! Very frustrating and also lost revenue for the manufacturer ,only good for the log burner unfortunately.

First post that I have seen explaining how to spot the damage, and stating that it is easy to spot. Only thing I have heard in past is its not easy to spot storm damage, which always made me wonder how companies can sell a bat and say no guarantees as its storm damaged if its so hard to spot!! I am sure there are some clefts that are still hard to pick out. Could storm damaged clefts be cut short for junior bats and mongoose style bats?

Thank you, your blog is truly in my favorites bar now :)

What do B3 do with storm damaged bats?

Hi Tom,

For the not so bad ones we will make into smaller sizes, as the forces involved are greatly reduced (lower weights / slower swing speed / slower bowling etc). The bad ones we will make into autrographin bats and use in the showroom.

These will however still come with a  full warrentee.

I've said it before, but wasteage levels on clefts are one reason why bats are the price that they are. The percentage is higher than people realise - not all storm damage but other factors as well, some of which emerge quite late meaning the maker has also wasted quite a bit of time.

That was a interesting read @The Doctor, one of the questions I always had. What other faults we should identify and try to avoid in a bat/cleft.

Thanks Steaky for the interesting read. I'm always willing to learn more.

Just wondering, this bat failed last season after about 10 seasons use. I'm not going to demand a refund from the supplier but is this storm damage or it has just dried out? Maybe hard to tell from a photo but I'm looking forward to hear what you think.

If it was storm damaged it wouldn't have lasted for 10 minutes let alone 10 seasons.

Nah they can go on for a while sometimes, doesn't always mean immediate destruction!

I remember the great storm of 1987, or rather I slept through it! Thousands of trees were uprooted and for the next couple of seasons a bat would snap in half every other game. I remember a certain Dr Paul Hawkins in his youth snapping a Reflex in half playing a cut shot. It was that common, think I sent a Slazenger V100 back for the same reason. They'll play fine and all of a sudden it goes, it's just a timebomb that may never explode.
