Chris, as it is your shape what would they do with the 30 you haven't picked? Can they sell them to other people?

Picked from clefts i presume!

If they're picked from clefts surely you won't be able to check the pick up, size for weight, performance etc you'd just get an idea of looks

We pick them from handled bats but not stickered or gripped, so we get a fairly good idea.

In reply - we kept the other 30 bats we didn't select this time round as we knew we would be doing a Gold and Silver range, so the bats that don't make the cut for one grade will likely make the grade below if that makes sense.

So you  have to buy a minimum of x amount of bats from newbery to choose your platinum bats from? Hence the reason to make different grades of the bats that aren't good enough to be platinums

Without giving too much away of a confidential agreement, like anything in business there are MOQ. Last year we satisfied these with only the Platinum, and I must stress the decision to expand has nothing to do with MOQs.

We received a lot of feedback, almost universally positive, about the Platinum, just the only issue was some people simply couldn't, or didn't want to, stretch to £320 for a bat, but still wanted the Newbery craftsmanship and IJC design. Hence, the Gold and Silver were born.

A question, without meaning to sound rude.

If the 30 bats you did not select were shown to you as Platinums, why would Newbery sell them to you at a later date as Gold or Silver?

Is that them admiting they showed you inferior goods first time round, or do you pay the same price for a Silver, Gold & Platinum with just the profit margin changing?

Not rude at all!

Newbery knew how picky they would be - and they knew some of the bats weren't going to make the cut!

Therefore they would rather the bats become Silver or Gold grade than go to waste! I'm sure they don't think they were inferior, and they probably wouldn't be to most shops, but as it is a bat carrying our own label, we want to be extra extra fussy!

Profit margins I won't get into - but I guarantee they aren't a significant consideration in the IJC Newbery collection. Sure, we want to make some money, but not all about that at the minute :)

That makes sense, as your criteria will obviously change slightly for the lower ranges. If Newbery thought they'd pass for Platinum, people are going to be getting some good Gold & Silver bats

Sadly the original batch of unselected Platinums were lost in a flood Newbery had earlier in the year, so won't be available, but the principle remains the same.

It is one option we are looking into for the future, but not this season unfortunately.

Are your Platinum bats full length? I was just browsing Newbery's website and it just seems most of the range have that bit shorter blade, I assume the Kudos still is even though they don't mention it in the description.

@ItsJustCricket seeing as you are heading down to Newbery to pick up some more bats, are you able to get some pictures of the impending 'quantum' range that has been seen about?

@skip1973 just put mine up against a few other SH bats and it's exactly the same, full length blade
