Bat Strike Map from Dummer
« on: November 16, 2015, 09:58:31 AM »

Harping back to the crictech sheets I used a few years ago, I took 2 bats with no use and used them against a bowling machine at Dummer Saturday. @petehosk also used them extensively. Possibly a couple of others had a go. Anyway, you can see very nicely the ball impact areas on the two photos below:-

Dummer is a bit spongy and the ball can bounce up but it's interesting how little the toe gets bashed.  Pete was mainly driving the ball and I had a mixture of good length, shortish and half volleys. Not sure what others had.

I always like to do a decent job of playing the edges in Nick!

Must be as I bounced @WalkingWicket37  bowling spin  ;)

I'll take these to @Vitas Cricket next weekend and see whether the ball marks spread much on a slightly lower surface.

I need to try the GN in less bouncy nets too! If I am striking the ball mid-high on the bat, then I need to know.
It certainly seemed to be quite high on the bat most of the time. I know people do mention the bouncy wicket but I also remember that past experiments indicated that wickets have less to do with it than we think!!

Always surprised me how high up the bat I hit the ball. Always used to go for a mid-low middle then when I checked, I discovered that a mid-middle was fine.

The basic tests I did on lower bouncing decks indicated a marginal difference (a couple of CM) but essentially the balls all hit the same areas. You crouch more on lower bouncing decks to compensate.

I had a bit of a smash with those two aswell, and considering I was playing some on the half volley the stoke marks are very high indeed!

Hard to tell from photos if it's happened here but in my experience some shots mark less or don't leave a mark - anything where the ball is skidding across the surface a little is much more likely to leave a big mark, so a cut or square drive might be obvious whereas a punch down the ground may not show so well. Anyone else seen the same?

Generally that is true for cherries but for bowling machine indents I think it's different

Yeah definitely true with proper balls, do think you get the same effect, albeit lesser, with bola balls though?

I always thought because they were harder off the bat they left marks on every attacking shot, because on my old scuff sheets I always had bola marks everywhere on the bat, but only cherries on certain parts of the blade
