H4L custom Warbird G1
« on: December 04, 2015, 07:11:56 AM »

Hi everyone, I know there is a lot of Warbirds about at the moment so thought I would share mine. Firstly thanks to Matt for making such a great bat and to Jake for arranging it for me.

This is a full size SH version of the Warbird, I had a kudos a few years back when first game out and I just never felt comfortable using a bat with a shorter blade regardless of how much shorter, no doubt a mental thing but anyway. So this still has the duckbill and the counter weight handle. G1 willow and a nice example itis as well with a little blemish up towards the stickers.

Now the bat itself. The balance and pick up are superb and I assume this is due to the counter balanced handle. Speaking of the handle its a lovely oval shape and fits in the hands superbly. This is 2.9 but feels lighter weighed at vitas and was bang on 2.9 so thank you Matt for getting request spot on, tight clean grains on a basically clean blade and grain runs straight through the toe which I look for in my bats. Edge size is 39mm and spine approx 67mm.Lovely profile with a mid/high middle on this bat as per my specs but the middle is certainly very very long and forgiving. Performance wise this will be a gun so really looking forward to getting in the nets and getting her match ready.
Couple of things though, the counter balanced handle makes changing the grip a real pain, I don't like the original grip that came with the bat and wanted to change it, I ended up starting at bottom with a pair of scissors and cutting the grip away as couldn't get over the top of the handle, also the edges are very sharp, and will need rounding, if I left like that I feel a leading edge would do some serious willow damage and I certainly don't want that. So all in very happy with this, we are lucky to have so e great bat makers amongst the forum.

another stunning Warbird - I quite like the original grip on it but thinking about it changing it would be a ball ache with the handle as it is

So the Warbird got her first run out today. I popped to Vitas this morning for a net session. Had 2x30min sessions booked in and after the thought process all night of which kit to take and bat to use (although this doesn't take as long know as the collection is somewhat smaller this season) I settled on the H4L kit. I also wanted to see how comfy the pro gloves from last season were.

So anyway first ball faced with the Warbird was nicked behind. But forgetting that one little mishap this bat is amazing. As I mentioned in original post the pick up is exceptional just feels like a feather in the back lift. First time I have batted for 30mins since last season and felt as good at the end as when I started.
Performance wise can be hard to gauge against bola balls but the middle is certainly long. The toe area is dead and I few that came right off the toe did shot through the hands but that's on any bat but when you find the sweet spot the sound is almost silent just hear the sound of the ball hit the netting.
Really can't wait to start using in outdoor nets in a couple of months. Will be a tough choice between this H4L, my B&S and Laver for the coming season but right now this could be the match bat for 2016.
Here are a few more pics

Those marks near the G1 sticker are probably the reason it ain't graded Pro. Lovely lovely bat that mate.
A lot of us could use such grading [emoji12][emoji16]. I'd say throw in another mark or two for me & label it a G2 [emoji3]

I wouldn't say its softest pressed, Matts pressing is very very good, hardly ever if ever have I heard someone say they have had a poor performing bat from H4L. I just asked for a 2.9 so I guess this was a lower density cleft Matt had at the time.

NNNNIIIIICCCCCCEEEEE!! Really nice bat! He presses his bats superbly these days!
I have an older H4L which is around 2'13, is 2 or 3 years old and makes a lovely net bat. The pressing is decent enough and performs really well.
But the bats Matt presses nowadays seem amazing and just incredible!
