Was it straight through Dave or off the bat?

I'd assume not, did it break the peak or did it just deform?

Depends on ball speeds/shape/deformation upon impact. All variables that can change ball after ball. Testing in a lab can only re-create impacts where as in a game the scenarios are infinite of why could happen and change.

As explained with the whole broad thing, if the ball is softer and deforms on impact it can force it's way through a gap that you wouldn't think it can fit through.

With the top edge changing the angle you could argue that the lid did it's job.
Certainly saved him a lot worse and can't have done any serious damage as he batted on.

That said I have a brand new Masuri staring at me and I'm worried now. What if there's a lad bowling bowling 90mph bumpers at me in a Sunday friendly next year?

I remember seeing Riki Wessels catch the ball in that gap in last years Big Bash against some quicker bowling. Just goes to show that the smallest deviation makes a huge difference.

Does the temperature or humidity have much of an effect Tom?

They test the helmets at ambient, UV and +50 degrees in the lab but there will always be restrictions on what can be done in a lab vs real life on the pitch.

Each model has a min of 30 impacts to pass the testing on various locations on the grilles.

Playing short balls on front foot is a t-20 invention and is an extremely risky shot. Helmet did its job! Batsmen shouldn't play quicks  (bowling short balls) a meter outside the popping crease.
