Bradford League
« on: December 22, 2015, 10:40:04 AM »

Looking at signing for a team in Bradford League in 2016; just wondering what I should be expecting with ground standards, travel times etc! Have played Nidderdale League etc before, and the grounds couldn't be more varied (with Harrogate's ground being pretty decent, to playing on a village green - which included a road in the pitch, fence posts, a pub wall, etc). Also, what's the standard like?!

Thanks guys

Do you mean the actual jct600 bradford  league ? That's  quite  high standards.

Which teams  are you looking  to sign up to

It all depends on the division and team you're looking to play for. Some are good and some not so much but that's the same everywhere. Traveling will be increased within the league from next year as The Bradford League merged with the Central Yorkshire league but that again will depend on which division your looking at.

Not an idea yet - I've been speaking to Robbo at Keighley, and they're looking for players...

I'm guessing this means it's going to be the same as what I've had before in that the top is good, and the bottom is normal? As regards to CYL merging, I'm guessing that's just 1st Teams Division 1? It's a bit of a weird way of working for me, as the league I'm in at the minute, it doesn't matter if you're a 1st team or 2nd team as to what division you can play in, purely and simply done on results.

Are pitches generally pretty decent prep or is it again, depending on who you're playing?

Travelling isn't a big thing, just got to factor everything in with my decision really! I do want to jump up in standard.

Just taken a look and Keighley will be in Championship Div A next season (http://www.bradfordcl.com/news2015structure.html), some cracking grounds to visit there with many being great decks for batting!!

The structure in the league is 1's V 1's & 2's v 2's....which is how it should be ;)

May have to take him up on his offer then! As a "batsman" (arguably self proclaimed... haha), it sounds like a good move!

And I don't know about that! As a lot of teams in Nidderdale were unbalanced if it were to be 2nds vs 2nds. There were 9 divisions, and some 2nd teams were in divs 8 and 9, whereas some were in div 3... and the difference in standard there was huge! I played div 9 once with a torn pec muscle, batting one handed, and still struck 30-odd! In that game, I also saw people be given out, walk off, and the new batsman walk out and take the bat off the out batsman... still, it was fun!

I'm guessing you play in Bradford?

No, I played in the CYCL for many years. A lot of friends who play in the Bradford league though.

Now retired from playing but umpiring in the Yorkshire League (North and South)

Ahhh okay! Well, I like what I'm hearing so far. Is there much I need to know about BL that's maybe unique? Any bits that may put me off or any bits that may seal the deal?

I think we have too many leagues..!

Nothing I can think of really, umpiring is pretty good and having played in the CYCL and then stood in a couple of game for Bradford league teams last year the teas are pretty good too ;)

Not too many leagues, just too many badly run leagues!!

We have/had an umpire who's favourite habit was giving out batsmen 10/11 unfairly as he liked to visit the bar before heading back home to his Mrs! Legend of the league...

Yes that's true. I'd say Nidderdale is fairly well run, but the difference in standard between top and bottom is quite a gulf.

Good teas = deal sealed! Hahaha

You looking to play 1st team? I nearly signed for Saltaire a few weeks ago, bloke that is in charge of them is a top guy, so would be a good place for you to play possibly. Played a few times at Keighley, not really a fan of the place or group of players. Where in the Nidd league did you play?

With the new bradford league set up, it should be a stronger standard than previously. There is some pretty average grounds though, mainly in the lower divisions

Currently play in the Bradford league, great competition very competitive. The grounds in the top division are all relatively close to each other which I love. As for the standards of the grounds theres some brilliant ones (St Lawrence, B & B) and some very average ones. Not sure what the lower divisions are going to be like in terms of ground quality or standard, could be interesting with the merger.

I've not a clue mate; I'd say 2nds just as a new face that's normally how things work. I know we did that at Ripley pretty much (if someone had just moved to the area and we didn't know them). I know a lad at Saltaire so possibilities!

That's the thing, I'd want to know the team first before committing, as I don't want to end up somewhere where it's a bunch of cocks. Done that before in Nidderdale League with Killinghall, and was the worst year I've had.

I'm currently at Ripley, but it's a bit hit and miss (i.e. can play all over). Seemingly people have a habit there of saying "No you're not good enough to open" as you're about to walk out. Arguably I should have just go you know what, I am, so f**k off! But made me go into my shell a bit and score a rather slow 20(ish).

I like the idea of good competition and a bit more pace on the ball! I'm not a big hitter, and prefer to just work the ball, so the more pace, the better for me!

I think our average pitches will trump yours: There's Thornton Watlass (http://s3.spanglefish.com/s/6983/pictures/big/thornton%20watlass%202%20(bedale).jpg) see photo.

In that photo, just behind the 3rd man, there is a road... this is part of the pitch. The boundary is actually the pub wall behind! There is also a tree bang in the middle of the pitch, fence posts in the pitch etc. The track also has a massive slope! So not ideal. Proper village cricket!

I looked at the new system (from the link above), and it looks like a decent system and if it's strong, should provide a good way of moving on up if you're good enough.

In experience, does the 1st team and 2nd team being a separate competition cause any issues with togetherness as a club? Nidderdale league doesn't have this, just has 9 divisions of 10?11? and you play wherever on merit, so you can have a 2nd team playing an ordinary first team.

"I can't use that! Don't you know I'm a 2lb 9 man?"
