Dull response and vibes
« on: December 30, 2015, 04:55:00 PM »

I bought a boutique bat from a forum member via ebay. With living away from the UK I was only able to collect the bat over Christmas. When it first arrived it was checked over by family and nothing obvious was found. When I tapped it up it sounded great apart from near the stickers. Very dull in sound and a lot of vibes. I did lean on it a little like when tapping down at the crease to see if there was any flex in the handle then on closer inspection I could just see a 'v' shaped crack in the stickers at the bottom at the splice.

The bat is hardly used and less than a year old. No dents, scrapes or water damage. The seller says it was ok before he sent it and it was sent in a bat box which seemed undamaged when it arrived.

I've contacted the maker and decided to send it back to him to look at. It is less than a year old and has not been abused so I'm hoping for a understanding bat maker (even though I'm not the original owner).

Have any other cbf'ers had any similar experiences? Any advice you can give?

Can't help you with that exact problem but I also bought a top end(salix) from eBay which has a crack right thru the shoulder all the way to the back...if yours is actually in the splice it's an easy fix for a new handle....if you like the bat it's worth getting fixed
I've emailed salix some photos of mine but from previous experience with damage in this area I am going to be unlucky I think
The seller was good and has offered a refund so it was a genuine error selling a damaged bat

These things can happen,I hope I'm wrong but my bat I don't think is repairable, yours if a brand new handle will go straight in will be as good as new.....

Looking at the bat design I have the shouldered are too thin for the amount of wood in the bat...but that's my uneducated view I'm not an expert on batmaking

Could be talking utter crap, but is the handle to shoulder ratio because of the handle stiffness? As in if the handle is much larger than the shoulders, there's not as much give upon contact, therefore there's a higher likelihood of damage occurring? I remember Streaky mentioning that sometimes the shoulder area can be too thin to put in a thick oval handle, so was just wondering if that was the case. :)

The bat sounds dull and has vibration as the bat lost a bit of power as well ? is the crack running parallel to the splice check that the bat binding at the bottom of handle  as it could be to high therefore failing to hold the shoulders together.

I sent the bat back to the boutique bat manufacture and he says he can't find anything wrong with it.

I know something is wrong. It doesn't feel right at all so to save any fret of what to do with it I've just told him to keep it. I don't need any bullshit at the moment and I'm just going to 'have to write it off as a bad lot and a lesson learnt.

Hmmm
Doesn't sound fair or right

Sometimes there's a time for companies no matter how small, to hold their hands up
The positive feedback they'd get from replacing a bat, that potentially has been poorly manufactured should far outweigh the small loss of replacement ?

If its any assistance you could ask someone on here to take a look or go to your local bat maker that said there comes a time when to draw a line.

If the part of the bat you hit the ball with sounds great what's the big issue?

You could be right. The best way to find out is to try it yourself. If you're willing to pay for postage you can have it. I'll contact the maker and ask if it can still be posted. Send me a pm and I'll forward you the details.

Today I wanted to know if there is something wrong with the bat by sending it to one of the experts on the forum. But too late it is already on its way to Kulli.

To give a little background I bought this bat. http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=33852.msg533319#msg533319

Tapping the bat up there was something wrong so I informed Danny and sent him some photos...

Instead of saying something like 'I can't see anything obvious but if you say there's something wrong, send it in but at your own cost' his reply was... "Having looked at the pics it looks that there is no damage per se to the handle/splice. It looks like only sticker damage where the ball has struck the splice. I wouldn't be worried at all and save yourself the expense of sending and returning the bat".

I sent it in anyway and the reply was... "We have inspected your bat and tested it thoroughly. I can't see any problems with it and feels good to me".

I want to let an independent bat maker take a look. Kulli, can I have it back please?
