NB 580+ Cricket Bat Review
« on: January 08, 2016, 05:57:52 AM »

Oh boy, as you can see, I’ve been rather busy!

Now we have a NB 580+ Cricket bat, which is a little stunner! Got this from Eclipse All Sports - I couldn’t stop myself when I saw it! Here are some pics:

And a better look at those grains:

Specs:
Weight – 2lb 10.42oz
Edge – 38mm
Spine – Approx 60-62mm
Shoulder – 14mm
Toe Edge – 18mm
Toe – 24mm
Handle – Semi-oval
Concaving – A fair amount, but not too aggressive

The profile is a duckbilled one with a sort of mid to mid low swell, with weight taken off towards the spine too, so it packs quite a bit of meat in the hitting zone. The concaving is probably on the heavier side of moderate, but not extremely aggressive. The handle is a semi-oval, it’s a bit on the thinner side, but not too thin. The duckbill helps with the pick up, it’s not a very light one, but certainly not heavy!

Onto the aesthetics, I honestly just couldn’t resist it when I saw how good it looked! With somewhere between 17-20 grains, all pretty evenly spaced out, and with a relatively clean face, it’s safe to say this looks better than a lot of G1 bats do! The finishing on this bat is really very good, it seems the finishing on a lot of Indian made bats have improved significantly over the past couple of years! The stickers are a bit loud for some, but I personally really like the orange and black. The lovely texturing really does seem to make a difference when looking at the bat. The small NB logos in the background of the black areas is also a nice touch.

Response wise, it didn’t take long at all with the mallet until this felt good to go! It has a beautiful response, especially for a lower end model, it has a ‘soft feel’ and a nice dull sound. Really well pressed. Been really impressed with the G3/4 offerings from NB, and feel they offer exceptional value for money! It’s a real shame that their higher end models don’t seem to appeal quite nearly as much, it’s ridiculous how much the top end junior bats are priced at on PDC!

Jesus wept that looks awesome for the price as well. I agree the lower end stuff from NB looks very impressive, especially with the top grade stuff being priced so high.

I am becoming more and more tempted by a NB

Gray nicolls in Australia seem to grade bats with heartwood lower than ones without. My elite looks better than half the Legends, better than most of the silvers and ultimate, yet it was significantly cheaper than them. Looks aren't everything I know, but is just funny seeing some companies down grade due to heartwood. NB seem to be doing the same

Yup, there's a lot of heartwood on this one, which isn't normally what I go for! Personally, I feel it just cracks up too easily around the heartwood area, so prefer all sapwood as the moisture tends to be higher in sapwood I believe. Heartwood tends to be stiffer, so there's less give upon contact and more cracking! Also, I think by Wright's grading, this is a G3 because of the heartwood and also the slight stain in the middle of the blade.
