An eye opener!

Being new to the forum (and the game relatively) what this forum has brought home to me is that you dont really have to be in the £400-£500 bracket to get a fantastic looking and decent performing bat. Prior to signing up on here I was looking at the little brochures that they send you with stuff, looking on line at some of the "Mainstream" suppliers and thinking ok there are those bats at £100,£150 £200 £250 etc etc but surely the "Team" players dont use those and continued to look at the "Pro" stuff.
Thank you Custom Bats Forum- you've probably saved me a fortune! Having already picked up the Salix POD Grade one luckily at a reasonable second hand price (although it hadnt been used) I will need a back up / Net Bat for which now I can see there are quality bats at half or less than the pro prices...Hmmm the choices! ....someone did mention that signing up on here would challenge my bank balance..I covet things you see.....

This is a forum designed for coveters of things :D For lower grade bats, people like Red Ink could do you a great deal on a lower grade bat and could probably design it to match your Salix or B3 could map it to make you an exact replica but in a lower grade.

Welcome to the forum, you can't go wrong with the advice of forumites and particularly forum sponsors, be they batmakers or suppliers.  You can spend a fortune, but you can also save a fortune!

The big brands have price points to suit everyone. If you use a retailer who takes the time to hand select their bats like we do, then there are some lovely bats to be had at the lower end. All of these are approx £100. Iffy lighting on one photo as i was in the storage area!





There will be some retailers out there that tell you a bat that hasn't been hand selected is no good, i would beg to differ, we definitely feel there is an advantage to hand selecting the bats we buy in, but as you can see from the below it isn't the end of the world if we don't. If a brand takes the stance to say that hand picking is not allowed, then we feel generally their quality control must be up to scratch, or they will have to gear up for a lot of returns. We have never felt the need to send a GM back because the look of the bat did not match the sticker it carried. New Balance have only been around for 5 minutes but early signs are good. Again all bats approx £100

If the heartwood was on the other side of that Mogul I'd have bought it without a 2nd thought!  :-[

And don't forget you can always get a bat handmade to your Own Specs

So regarding heartwood, if you are right handed, I guess you would want it on the outside? heartwood harder?. Not really up to having a bat mapped to the Salix just yet bit too early, but it feels good in the hand, a ball pings well off it and doesn't even feel like anything is hitting it, TBH I don't really know what Suits me yet, so a lower price bat as a back up will suffice for now. Must say I quite like the look of the NB 580+ and a good review on here

In answer to the 2nd question first, the darker heartwood is harder than the lighter coloured sapwood.
Apparently it's "better" to have heartwood on the outside edge, but myself & @smilley792 prefer it on the inside edge. It's a personal preference rather than a set rule.

It's probably worth baring in mind that heartwood tends to be although harder also a bit more brittle and succpeptable to cracks, so if you have noticed that you rather inside or outside edge predominately you might want to get the heartwood on the side your not edging as much. For example I inside edge incredible amounts especially compared to outside edges so I get it on the outside edge

Personally wouldn't buy a bat with heartwood  as heartwood is an area  of the blade where there's little or no sap
