Hi all, had a club meeting yesterday and decided we would try and get an overseas this year after a few years without one. Mainly as you hope that individual will be one of your better performers and play most weeks.
We have put a bit of cash aside but are not planning on paying anybody above lodgings and finding a job if they want.
How have your clubs faired with amateur overseas? Successful? Worth doing? We will probably go for an Aussie/kiwi and look for support through an agent. Pearls of wisdom appreciated

Don't waste you time or money. Better off just focusing on your clubs players and accepting if your club isn't at the level you want then so what. At the end of the day it's about enjoying it and competing, not point paying someone to artificially hold you above your clubs actual ability.

There are plenty of aussies/kiwi's who are looking to basically have a holiday so if you must, just offer free lodging and a job and that's it. You'll still get someone who is more than likely going ot contribute to the club. May not be anything more than a average player but hey, it's still a body and you can call them a overseas if you want to big your club up.

Thanks, that was along the lines of our discussions. Not really in it to get an absolute gun who we pay in order to gain results we wouldn't ordinarily get. Focussed more on an able player who will chip in at club, be a fresh face to have around and someone who barring any unforeseen issues is a name the captains can pencil in each week! I'm sure our relatively new junior section would enjoy the novelty too.

Hooray - Eeyores back!!

I don't agree entirely with your point Adi (but don't disappear just yet), as we have had a few who have coached junior's and senior's alike - and have enhanced the club.

That's what you should aim for rather than a one year wonder who will win you a few games.

Our league is full of them

Some come for a few grand and a place to stay
others are paid up to daft money like 8-10k

our club is lucky we are part of a scholarship program.

We get ours from Ballarat Cricket association 1st grade people who fancy it apply and they a board picks the winner.

We provide them with some where to stay and provide half there flight.

I've only been at the club last season and our overseas was 2nd highest run scorer in the league.

They have never had a bad player. however there not guaranteed superstars just good quality players.

Bottom tier of WEPL so reasonable. Most teams have an overseas but we are a smallish club at that level.

We were in a similar position last season, after possibly 10-15 years since the club last had an overseas.

we opted for a young aussie, he paid his flights and accommodation (cheap anyway as we did all his cooking for him) and we got him some work to keep him busy.

Like it's been said, depending on the individual it can benefit the club off the pitch and with the junior section. Get them involved with coaching and the youngsters can begin to look up to an overseas. Again added bonus it's an extra player every week and generally a decent one at that. We didn't know what to expect with ours, we're going to slot him into the middle order but after a few good early knocks he saw out the rest of the season opening the batting and topping the league run scoring chart. So can't complain.

We have another lined up for this season, and by all accounts he's going to be even better than last years

Long and short of it, it's well worth it, what do you guys have to lose? Especially if they pay for their own flights which is a bonus

We had our first overseas player last year and it went down really well. He came over eager and wanting to improve and bought some new ideas and thoughts to the club. All he needed was somewhere to live and a job which the club sorted.
Came over as an opening bowler who batted 8/9 but after injury that restricted his bowling after the first few games he ended up batting at 4 and finished top 10 in the league runs. We had no complaints at all!

Their real value lies in their ability to coach and bring the young guys with talent through. Many of the guys in our first team today would have been mid-grade twos players if it hadn't been for the coaching ability of oour overseas.

Getting in a quality coach is such a massive quality. Ive played with an Aus u19 who jacked in cricket whilst with us and two test players, one which took to coaching and one who didnt bother. Although he one who didnt was on rather stupid money...

Sigh - Yes it's 'negative' but what's the point in bringing in a player (who as you all keep saying 'tops the charts') who is carrying your club? That just means your club isn't actually good enough?? why not sort that out rather than artificially bolster it? Ok, it's great for the guys who are artificially kept in higher leagues but what's the point??

I'll take my division this year as an example

Top of the division had an overseas and two paid players - they won the league by 20 ish pts. Take them away and they'd be mid table but still decent so why bother? They'll have to keep paying to stand a chance next year or winning the league.

Second place - One overseas and one paid player. Paid player was top div runs scorer and carries the side. The other lad was 10th highest run scorer and got some wickets. Remove those two for 'avg' players and that team would be relegated

Team in 3rd - no paid players, no overseas

4th - overseas only. avg team really, guy is nothing special as a player and nothing special as a coach.. so what's the point?
5th - no paid or overseas
6th - paid player. carries the side with the bat and ball. Team would be relegated without him
7th - no overseas or paid
8th - overseas bowler who I'm going ot say was very important to them as he was 4th highest wicket taker and didn't go for many runs. 100% they would have been relegated without him (so, only 2 can actually get relegated so in fairness, someone would have survived but they'd have been scrapping for survival like the ones above)
9th - no idea. Never know which cousin is appearing but given they were relegated I suspect they had no overseas and no paid
10th - actually did have an overseas all rounder .. He was an avg player and so, because of that couldn't single handedly save the club from going down. Also knocking off one of the players sisters didn't help club relations I hear.

The only point I will agree with is the coaching angle, for some reason regardless of quality (well, first half the season anyway), youths do listen to overseas more due to being called an overseas. Is that really their value though? surely finding a local player who can coach would be of more benefit ? There are usually loads around who can play at that standard without over powering AND do the youth stuff for free games/stash. rather than actively paying a player etc etc

There is both sides to the argument really though. It's all well and good saying one player carries the team but we all know it's not entirely true based on the overseas player model. Sure, if you're paying more than the overseas, that isn't really sustainable as a club. I personally regard it as a bit pathetic. I play at my club because I want to play with my mates. I pay my �10, enjoy a game in some (hopefully) decent weather and then grab a beer afterwards. If any of my mates whom I'm playing with were only there because they are getting paid, I wouldn't be interested.

Overseas players are different. More often than not they are learning their way in the game and are helpful in and around the club because they are grateful to be here. If they perform well and help a team get promoted, it's a bonus. It's not often you get team's that can move up and down amongst Premier League divisions on the strength of a single player.

Once Played a few Sunday games for a club who had an Aussie overseas he caused a lot of problems and he used to turn up to play drunk remember one match he got out cheaply as he walked back to the pavilion he took a kick at the Chairmans wife's dog missed and ended up on his backside he wasn't asked back....
