Nets
« on: January 23, 2016, 10:52:32 AM »

Any net accidents you'd rather forget? Inspired by my net last night, where I somehow found a hole in the net and hit a young lad in the next lane flush on the top of the head. Luckily he had a lid on, and it wasn't with any real force, but got me thinking how it could have been worse...
Once had a lad at our club split his eye open because a bowler was using a kids ball and it snuck through the gap in his lid. Blood everywhere. Not pretty.

A guy at my first club had a ball come off the shoulder of his bat and hit him just above the eye. Split his eyebrow open and one of those places where it just seems to never stop bleeding!

A close one witnessed last week where a batsman in one net stuck his head in the net to reach down for the ball rather than using his bat and the batsman in the other net leg glanced it into his head as he was collecting the ball. Fortunately the dividing net was thick solid fabric at the batsmans end and took the pace off, plus both were wearing lids.

Several years ago, I'd just finished my net and just after removing my helmet as I was stood at the back of the net I took my eye off the action momentarily. The batsman in the next net drilled a skimming straight drive and too late I saw the ball coming straight at me. It hit me very hard flush in the middle of the forehead. I had a hell of a headache and a magnificent seam print on my forehead however I was incredibly lucky, if I'd had my head turned it could have killed me.  That's why everybody tells you to watch what's going on in the nets.

Last year someone was hit in the eye socket and now has a black hole in their vision from that eye and will never recover. He was padding up at the end of a net and someone hit a straight drive

He's only 20

Had Notts playing a game at my club, everyone having a net before and attracting a crowd. Everyone shouts "heads" and moves out the way leaving me to take a straight drive to the shin.

I've seen a few over the years and they're never pretty.

At the Rose Bolw I've seen a ball go through the grill of someone's helmet resulting in 2 black eyes and a lot of swelling.
Also seen a couple without a lid miss a hook (broken nose) and top edge a reverse sweep into their eyebrow.

Also once played a straight drive that the bowler didn't get their hands up in time, resulting in. Split forehead (a lot of blood!) and 13 stitches.

Seen a few broken bits and thumb dislocations etc while batting and the daft ones when someone bends into a net without paying attention and gets whacked by a shot from the next net, but by far the most irritating kind is when someone sticks their foot out to one that's been driven back and flicks it up, I clocked one right in the middle of the forehead from one of my club (who is old and experienced enough to know better) decided to kick a hard hit ball up into my face. Always watch the net, and trust noone!

At a trial for my university team I hit a perfect lofted straight drive and it hit the back wall, bounced off and smashed the coach's laptop, safe to say I didn't make the team that year.

I've seen a few guys get pinned by a ball that's hit bumps in the wicket that shouldn't be there when we're outdoors and gone at least chest high, for some reason the groundsman never rolled the practice wickets last year.

I took one on the chin a few years ago as I was in shoddy nets it bounced on a loose bit of Astro and smacked me in the jaw. Interesting to say the least. 1 positive I took from this was I don't have a glass jaw haha

I nearly killed a kid on wed.

Drove a spinner back fairly hard on the floor. Everyone moved to side to get out the way, ball hit the cone marking the stumps took off and to the right and hit the back net about 2inches to the left of a kids eye!

He crapped himself. Was so close

Had a few happen last week. I got a beamer from the 2nd XI opening bowler that dipped right at the last second and hit me in the stomach. Bowler was apologetic afterwards but I told him not to worry about it as we've had worse happen to each other in the past.
2nd XI opening bowler again, only this time with a yorker that his brother didn't read correctly, only for all of his left toes to get hit on the full, he was limping for quite a while afterwards.
1st XI captain ducked into a bouncer, luckily for him it only hit his upper arm.
1st XI opening bowler, against medical advice, decided to try and bowl at full tilt when he was already suffering from tissue damage in his right knee, he went down like a ton of bricks and now has a torn muscle.
