Making a guess, either to cover up a crack in the handle or it's where he replaced twine with tape.

Storm is a brilliant name!

Someone I know has a kid called 'Ace' in his class - also an excellent name.

Be interesting to think why bmac would cover up a crack. Embarrassed on the telly? Or scared daves mate will return it?

Probably to hold it together. Maybe likes the flex it gives him in the handle but doesn't want it going to pieces as it's a favourite.

Could it have something to do with how he holds the bat / avoiding bruising on fingers/thumb? guess we'll never know...

or maybe just wanting to make sure the grip doesn't slip as the medical (cloth) tape usually sticks better.

Not the best pictures but it looks like it might just be a Brendon thing

I'll second Saunders- I've done this to one of my sticks as the handle/shoulder joint has taken a battering over the last few years.

I had posted a query to Laver & Wood about BMac bats. Here is their response and the picture of BMac profile which they make (min weight 2lb12oz).

"I cannot confirm or deny that we make Brendan McCullums bats. I can confirm the top bat in the image attached is the profile he uses at 2lbs 12ozs in Reserve grade willow (this  is the only that will have the density low enough to achieve this shape)."
