Is everybody trying to whack Yorkers and low full bungers !!!

Hope it ok let me know got you them stickers as asked pal

That's the annoying thing, I wasn't trying to whack it! Low full toss on the pads that I tried to clip away. No intention to smash the ball. Oh well, glued and clamped in true CBF fashion.

Awesome, I owe you one mate.

Of course hard floor and hard balls there gonna be no give at all.

I use one of my net bats (well they become match bats normally !!!!)...

My head was telling me to use my Norfolk Butterfly, my heart was saying try out the new B3. Regretting the choice a touch now.

I knocked in the edges and toe for around 20-30 minutes. I haven't been able to make any indents into the face so I presumed it was ready to go.

Used it for the first time in winter nets, didn't really hit enough balls to make a sound judgement but I was surprised how much vibration there was from shots. Probably a combination of my lack of timing and the handle and blade needing some more prep. I did have some damage from flicking away a full toss  >:(

This 20 minute knocking stuff is just totally daft.  I have owned three B3 and whomever dreamt the up this theory just asking for bat damage. Every bat needs proper knocking be it B3, GM, etc. wish people would stop saying this stuff on the page.

I know they are pre oiled...blah blah blah....but there are no short cuts and the fact they are a hard press is all the more reason to do it. I will oil them, wait a day or so and knock and knock and they dent eventually like any other bat. The surface compacts, especially the edges and toe and then i even it out.

That 20 mins knocking was a true simulation of a new ball hitting the bat? Doubt it.

I have another two on the way in my first bespoke design, you can follow their progress when i knock em on my Facebook page.

At least it is fixable.

I gave my B3 a good two odd hours of knocking in just the face and toe and no matter how hard I hit it with the mallet (a Puma) I just couldn't get any indentations in in whatsoever. About 5 odd nets into preseason and nothing's occurred yet..

Truth is if you jab down on a Yorker indoor on a non forgiving surface your looking  for trouble no matter how much you knock a bat in.

I have a issue with inside edge near the toe as I play with a slight closed face and have clipped a few there.

As many will know indoor nets is a killer of bats I advise use with caution I'm sure other makers will agree indoor nets is a pain in the  toe !!!!

I tend to use a new one with throw downs only and use a older bat in indoor nets as bats new or old struggle with hard floors and hard balls

Edges and toes always need knocking in on any bat but even that will not save a indoor compression strike most of the times

the fact they are a hard press is all the more reason to do it.

Could you explain this please?

I have always thought the harder a bat was pressed the less knocking in it requires but the longer it will take to open up

I have heard that some companies 'pre knocked in' service simply involves pressing a bat harder or for a second time.

Easier you read this. It is on topic.

READY PRESS - and the science behind it.

I mean more if your using a cheap light mallet, but 20 mins is just too little. I have a few mallets and all dent bats.

I clarified my statement. Refresh. Misunderstanding. You would have read the statement that a B3 still needs a hand knock and some playing in. That top layer still hardens through this process.

Was just a little shocked by the theory that a hard pressed bat requires more knocking in than a softer pressed bat  ??? The word 'more' was what threw me if I'm honest. Thought I was missing out on some bat-related knowledge but thanks for clarifying

I agree completely with dave.

Indoor Nets are killer. And have lost/damaged many a good bat. Any Yorker type shot is gonna cause damage to the bat.
Balls kinetic energy has to go somewhere, the floor is never gonna give way, so it's your bat that's always gonna fail.

The majority of pitches we play on in league games will have a little give, so if outdoor netting is available its preferred for a good bat.

I have 2 net bats, both are heavily knocked in around the toe, and then tape and fibre scuff sheeted to give it a chance. Still I had to glue(but not clamp) my bb on its second nets.

Digging out Yorkers is most I'll do, definately no driving, but sometimes it's best to just leave. It's not like a wicket actually counts in doors.

Now the seasons coming up, I will give my match bats a run out, but no bowling machines or actual bowling, just ten minutes each net with either the side arm club, or just a guy doing throw downs, with some sued but high quality balls.

Losing a 400 bat to an indoor net is just not worth thinking about.

Winter nets is always a tricky one to manage in terms for bats. You want to use your new bats and prepare them for the start of the season but you also want to protect your best bats from damage. Kind of a double edged sword that has no right or wrong answers. I used a new bat, it got a little bit of damage. Serves me right for risking it.

Regarding the knocking in, I was smashing the face with my GN deluxe mallet as hard as I could and had no indents   to show for it. To me, that shows me that netting with old balls can begin. I may decide after a few nets to get the mallet out again depending on response and if any damage has occurred.

My B3 is indenting and showing seam marks and I'm using a GN Deluxe mallet as well.

I disagree to some this mate, all bats are different and some will require less knocking in than others, no amount of knocking in would prevent a crack like this. I believe things have changed but the B3 I received could have faced ball bearings and not marked up.

Ok. I agree with everyone that this specific crack was perhaps not preventable after 20 mins knocking, however I see too often bats I hard knock get taken into nets and the user just starts swinging like it's a their old faithful and tada it cracks.

My point is there are no shortcuts and the more the traditional knocking and playing in processes are followed the more likely the bat will hardened sufficiently to survive this type of ball. I certainly think 20 mins knocking may have been an underestimate but that shot was not playing in the bat either, especially on hardwicket.

My experiences with pressed bats is that any time spent knocking is not wasted and you generally find that top layer will dent after a hour of moderate effort and the bat performance improve after the second.

Anyway I don't want this getting out of hand. I have my own two B3 bats coming and will prepare them like I do and hopefully in a couple of months begin netting as I want to improve on this disaster of a season.

Posted my design in the big 50% thread. Have a look.
