Newbery Uzi SPS - another refurb project
« on: March 07, 2016, 07:49:40 PM »

Well I picked this up off a well know auction site recently.
It's in fairly good condition, considering it's age, but could do with a bit of TLC.

This was listed at 2lb11 and I paid £95 posted for it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it actually weighs 2lb10 exactly in it's current state.

Upon first inspection, I suspect that it's been lightly used and chucked in a kit bag, so the back is a bit rough. Someone also defaced the shoulders with a sharpie, so im guessing it must be a pro bat  ;)

This will need to have the toe guard (which is already hanging off) removed. I then plan to give all the exposed Willow a fine sanding so it's nicely finished again, then apply a coat of oil or two to get it into a useable condition.

The vital statistics:
Weight in current condition: 2lb10
Edge size at peak: 30mm
Edge size at shoulder: 10mm
Edge size at toe: 13mm
Thickest point of toe: 25mm
Peak spine height: 60mm
Concaving: heavy
Handle: a lovely oval. Also happens to be one of the Carbon ones

Does anyone know what the 50mm sticker on the edge means?  :-[

Performance
It seems to tap up nicely, without any lights being in immediate danger! The sound it makes is slightly different to other bats, which I expect is down to the special handle.
The toe is dead as you'd expect, with the mallet starting to rebound (or the start of the sweet spot) about 40mm from the toe. The best rebound (or middle, to those who can find it) is about 175mm from the toe, and the sweet spot extends to about 300mm from the toe (just below the hammer edge logo).

Anyway, enough waffle and measuring, I'll let the video and pictures tell the story much better than I can.

I never knew Newbery did a crbon handle!

Also I think to 50mm sticker was for the spine, back in the days when that was big!

Thirdly o don't think I've seen an Uzi with that much concaving before?!

Question is, do you know what BMF stands for? 😉

Yep, not many left now for various reasons, which is why I snapped this one up. It's the first one I've seen come up for sale in a good while
Also I think to 50mm sticker was for the spine, back in the days when that was big!
But I measured the spine as 60mm  ???

i think this is the standard Uzi shape isn't it? I've seen a few in this profile

Both this Uzi and the previous one I had are minimal concaving

And I think the sticker was there for effect when the bat came out first, but they only removed it from new ones last year

Although a lot more accurate than my answer, I wanted to see if people would believe newbery would add abit of Samuel l jackson to there bats!

Well Big Mother F++ker is what I heard from a retailer, but I may have been mistaken
I agree with Carlo though I is the best Newbery I've ever played with, even in my short life

The handle (carbon) was about the last straw with the authorities who shortly after this was made changed the ruling regarding the materials used in the handle. You could use the bat till the end of its life and that was that.

The handles were so unusual...difficult to explain but lots of flex and tinny....Newbery would change it for a cane one free-which is what I did with mine

I don't remember what happened to my bat but I sure wish I'd kept it

Phenomenal bats these were  :) :)

Tims love of golf/fishing led to the handle development as he used a carbon fibre fishing rod in the early prototypes I believe.

Had a C6 back in the day but couldn't get on with it as it was so light, was actually refurbed at Tims when I went down to visit and poke around the bat shed before talking all things innovation with him.
